BCS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Yes.....I've skipped the bowl season. Lets get serious, there are WAY too many bowl games that are played each year. I understand that the bowls are a reward for a fine regular season but SIX (6) wins to become bowl eligible ? That is a joke ! If you don't win at least 7 or 8 games, the only bowling you should be doing is at your local BOWLING ALLEY !

THE LINE: Alabama.....5 1/2.....Texas
EXTRA POINTS: After viewing each teams conference championship games, it would be easy to surmise a blowout victory for Alabama over the Longhorns. Bama' took apart the defending national champion Florida Gators with a suffocating defense, ground and pound running game and short/intermediate passing game orchrestrated by first year signal caller Greg McElroy. The fact that McElroy is 27-0 as a starter (both high school and college) says that he is a "winner" at the highest level of competition. As impressive as Alabama looked in the SEC Championship, Texas looked unimpressive in squeaking by a three loss Nebraska team. If it wasn't for an out of bounds kickoff by Nebraska, there was no way Colt McCoy was going to drive the Horns' 70 yards in a minute against the Cornhuskers defense. Texas' inhability to run the ball with any consistency hurt them in that game. Texas will have to keep the Bama' defense honest or McCoy will be running for his life ! Both coaches have won national championships and have big game experience. Both teams offensive and defensive coordinators are experienced and ready. Watch out for special teams as Texas' Jordan Shipley has the ability to run back punts and kickoffs the distance, or at least set up the Longhorn offense in good field position. Javier Arenas of Alabama is capable of doing the same thing for Bama'. All things being equal, I like Texas in a major UPSET ! Take the Horns' and those 5 1/2 points.

Ingram Takes Home Heisman

The Alabama Crimson Tide have a storied college football history, but never in their illustrious program have they produced a Heisman Trophy winner. That all changed this past Saturday night as Crimson Tide running back Mark Ingram became Alabama's first Heisman winner. Ingram narrowly edged Stanford running back Toby Gerhart by 28 votes (the closest voting in Heisman Trophy history). Ingram and Gerhart were followed by Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and Florida quarterback and former Heisman winner, Tim Tebow.

The 212 pound Bama' sophomore rushed for a school record 1,542 yards, averaging 6.2 yards per carry while piling up 18 touchdowns. Ingram sealed the deal with a supreme effort in the Tides' SEC Championship Game victory over Florida rushing for 113 yards and 3 TD's and also catching a critical screen pass and rambling 56 yards on the play. Maybe its me, but he sure reminds me of Emmitt Smith (and not because they share the same number 22). They have very similar running styles, not speed burner types, but excellent quickness to the hole and great balance. If Ingram can duplicate the former Dallas Cowboys output, he's in for a stellar pro career.

In other news, some coaching vacancies have been filled:

Turner Gill was named Head Coach of the Kansas Jayhawks taking over from embattled coach Mark Mangino. This is an excellent hire as Gill had done a marvelous job resurecting the Buffalo program from a flatlining program to a MAC Championship in two seasons. Gill was a candidate for the Auburn job last year before the Tigers went in the direction of Gene Chizik. With plenty of Big-12 ties (Gill was an ALL-BIG 8 quarterback with the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the mid 80's) and excellent recruiting abilities, he should not only keep Kansas a contender in the weak Big 12 North division but battle Nebraska and Bo Pelini in the not so distant future.

Kelly Named Notre Dame Head Coach

As I orginally reported (before Weis got canned), Brian Kelly will be officially named Notre Dames 29th Head Coach this afternoon.

All of you who read this blog KNOW that I am hardly a Notre Dame fan but this hire makes me actually think, will I root for the Irish ?   I have met Brian Kelly a few times (but a long long time ago) as one of my closest friends (who reads this blog) played on the same team as Kelly at Assumption College (a small Catholic college located in Worcester, MA). After graduating, he also coached "Fletch" as a defensive back for two seasons. I also believe that this was the BEST choice Notre Dame could have ever made. Randy Edsell is a solid coach who has done a great job building the Connecticut Huskies from Division 1-AA to a year in and year out bowl participant. He just doesn't have the "personality" it takes to recruit on the national landscape.

Kelly is a bright, engaging personality and although his offenses have been explosive wherever he has coached (be it at Grand Valley State, Central Michigan or Cincinnati) he comes from a defensive background (linebacker at Assumption and Defensive Coordinator). He understands that offenses sell tickets and defenses ultimately win championships. He has done wonders with a Cincinnati Bearcats team that was an AFTERTHOUGHT in regards to the college football world prior to his arrival. Back to back BCS games for Cincinnati ?   It had never happened before and it will never happen again. I don't think I can ever truly become a Notre Dame fan, but I appreciate Brian Kelly far too much to be a Notre Dame hater (except when they play either my Washington Huskies or my adopted team, the L.S.U. Bengal Tigers).

For all of you who think he'll be lucky to win six games next season, think again !   Notre Dame has a very soft schedule and based on Kelly's coaching ability, those losses to U.S.C. and Navy will soon become a distant memory. He will keep a lot of those recruits committed to the Irish and bring along some much needed defensive talent. It is crucial however that he takes with him Jeff Quinn (offensive coordinator at Cincinnati) as Quinn has been with Kelly for the past 23 years. Quinn will coach the Bearcats in the Sugar Bowl against Florida, then probably bolt for South Bend unless the head job is offered to him.   Don't be shocked if Grand Valley States head coach Chuck Martin leaves for the D-Coordinators position with Notre Dame. He is a Kelly guy and is an EXCELLENT defensive mind.

I'm predicting here, that Notre Dame will win at least 8, possibly 9 games next year and bring the excitement back to South Bend that it has been so lacking.

Championship Week (November 5, 2009)

Here we go, better late than never ! To everyone, I apologize as I did not have a blog earlier. I'm just now getting over my Baton Rouge hangover ! TO ANYONE that is a fan of college football OR football in general....you have to go to an L.S.U. Tigers game at "Death Valley". The most amazing experience I've ever had at a football game !

THE LINE: Cincinnati.....2 1/2.....AT PITTSBURGH
EXTRA POINTS: Okay....the Bearcats are ranked 5th in the country, undefeated, have the most prolific offense in the country, have not ONE but TWO proven quarterbacks that can beat you, a record breaking wide receiver who can return kicks and punts...all this AND they are underdogs ? There has to be a reason. Pitt has the "X" factor....Dion Lewis. He could well be the BEST freshman running back (with apologies to LaMichael James). The Bearcats defense has faltered in recent weeks, especially the run defense. Pitt has the best pass rush in the Big East and they lead the nation with 43 sacks. Look for end Greg Romulus to have a big game. Looks like SNOW and COLD which will only help the Pitt defense. Besides, Brian Kelly will be coaching Notre Dame next week !
PREDICTION: Pittsburgh 31-Cincinnati 28

BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

THE LINE: TEXAS.....13......NEBRASKA

EXTRA POINTS: The Longhorns will NOT lose this game BUT the Huskers defense will keep it close. The one thing that could keep Nebraska in the game is special teams and that HUGE defensive tackle SUH !

Colt McCoy will need to use his legs in this one as I don't think he'll have all day to throw. I like Texas to go to the BCS Championship game.

PREDICTION: Texas 22-Nebraska 13

ACC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

THE LINE: GEORGIA TECH.....1.....CLEMSON

EXTRA POINTS: The weather down in Tampa is supposed to be stormy so the running games should be paramount in this contest. Both teams coming off dissapointing "rivalry" games against SEC opponents last week. They may have been looking ahead to this matchup. C.J. Spiller is as dangerous a player as there is in the country...watch out for his return ability, especially on kick offs. Josh Nesbitt has run the triple option attach to perfection (with the exception of last weeks game against Georgia). With bad weather, I like the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech to run on Clemson, but this one will be close.

PREDICTION: Georgia Tech 29-Clemson 24

SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

THE LINE: FLORIDA.....5 1/2.....ALABAMA

EXTRA POINTS: Tim Tebow's final SEC game.....his third champioship game in four years. A great college career. All that being said, I believe Nick Saban will "outcoach" Urban Meyer (not an easy thing to do). I love Javier Arenas and his ability to run back punts....this should be key for setting up good field position against a stingy Gators defense. In the end, I don't think this will come down to the quarterback play (a decided edge for Tebow). Tide quarterback McElroy grew up last week against Auburn driving Bama' 70 for the winning score. I just like the secondary of Alabama to lock down the Florida receiving threats....Alabama HAS Julio Jones......Florida doesn't. The Gators missing Carlos Dunlap will not help Florida's cause to disrupt the passing game of the Tide. Either way, it's going to be a "barn burner".....but I have to go with the Alabama Crimson Tide to pull off the "mild" upset and extract revenge for a spot in the 2010 BCS Championship Game against Texas.

THE LINE: California.....7......AT WASHINGTON

EXTRA POINTS: Jahvid Best will not play due to concussion symptoms. This could be Huskies quarterback Jake Lockers final game (I HOPE NOT !). He will most likely be a first round selection, but would benefit from another year under a Steve Sarkisian coached offense. Washington has played some very good football and some very bad football....classic inconsistency. This week they pull off the upset and play emotional (if they can stop making stupid penalties). Watch out for freshman running back Chris Polk....1,015 and 7 TD's so far this season.

Weis Out At Notre Dame, Bowden Uncertain

It's official, Notre Dame has fired Head Coach Charlie Weis. Twenty three losses in three years just didn't get it done in South Bend. I had the Irish winning 9 or 10 games this year, especially with the soft schedule and seven home games. Finishing 6-6 is just mediocre. Notre Dame has had three consecutive recruiting classes ranked in the top 5. He just couldn't get it done. All of you who read my blog KNOW that I have no "like" for Notre Dame. Still, it is a VERY good job....25 million dollar facilities, their own television network (NBC or the Notre Dame Broadcasting Company) and a national recruiting base. Forget all these so called "academic requirements"....if they have all these academic issues recruiting players why have they finished in the RIVALS top 10 six years in a row ? Lets not feel bad for Weis, he has an 18 million buy out deal and will land with and N.F.L. team next year (Kansas City Chiefs would be my bet).

Here are the top candidates that I think Notre Dame will consider:

Urban Meyer- I think this would be the "dream" for Notre Dame but I don't see the Gators letting Meyer go that easily. It could cost Notre Dame alot of money ! Meyer has previously stated that Notre Dame is his "dream job"...but based on his recent recruiting (top notch) this is a long shot. But, Tim Tebow is leaving and why not leave on top with another possible BCS Championship (if they can beat Alabama in the SEC Championship Game).
Bob Stoops- A midwestern Catholic kid with excellent recruiting ties to football rich Texas and the midwest, this would be a very good hire. Coming off a dissapointing 7-5 season (mostly due to player injuries), Stoops has been at Oklahoma for 10 years now and might think a change of scenery would re-energize him.
Brian Kelly- The BEST and most LOGICAL choice. He was won EVERYWHERE he has coached (Grand Valley St., Central Michigan) and look what he has done at Cincinnati. He has the Bearcats on the verge on a second straight BCS game, Big East Championship and possible BCS Championship game (depending on outcomes from Florida, Alabama and Texas in their conference championship games). He runs a dynamic offense, understands defense (a former linebacker at Assumption College and defensive coordinator with Grand Valley St.) and has that "charisma" factor that could stock Notre Dame with top notch recruits on BOTH sides of the ball and the alumni would love him.

Other possible candidates would be Gary Patterson at T.C.U. Patterson has done a marvelous job resurecting the T.C.U. program and is a very balanced coach (offense and defense).

Jon Gruden always gets headlines but I don't like a former PRO coach running the ship for Notre Dame. Jim Harbaugh would be a decent fit. Another midwestern guy who can recruit at good academic institutions (Stanford).

All being said, "IF" Notre Dame settles for anyone else other than those on the above list, they will settle for less and be in the same qaundry five years from now and another Charlie Weis moment.

THE LINE: Texas.....21......AT TEXAS A&M
EXTRA POINTS: 116th game of this traditional Thanksgiving rivalry. Texas is assured of a berth in the Big 12 Championship game, BUT a loss here "could" derail their BCS Championship hopes. I like Texas to win it but 21 points is an awful lot in a rivalry game !
PREDICTION: Texas 34-Texas A&M 20

THE LINE: Alabama.....10.....AT AUBURN
EXTRA POINTS: Bama' will be playing Florida in the SEC Championship game. The question is, will they overlook this game as even if they lose this against Auburn and win in the SEC Championship game, they will be assured of a spot in the BCS title game. The answer....NO ! Saban will not let it happen !
PREDICTION: Alabama 37-Auburn 17

UPSET OF THE WEEK

THE LINE: AT BOISE ST.....13 1/2......Nevada
EXTRA POINTS: Nevada comes in winning 8 straight ! They have three 1,000 yard rushers in the backfield ! Last time they played on the blue turf, they took Boise St. to 4 overtimes. Boise St. has stayed unbeaten but played in some too close for comfort ballgames.   I like the Wolfpack of Nevada to SHOCK the state of Idaho !
PREDICTION: Nevada 30-Boise St. 27

THE LINE: Pittsburgh.....E.....AT WEST VIRGINIA
EXTRA POINTS: As much as it would mean for the Big East to have a one loss Pitt team playing and undefeated Cincinnati team next week for the Big East Title, I like the Mountaneers to win this years "Backyard Brawl". This game this year means everything to West Virginia. Pitt still has a shot at the Orange Bowl next week.
PREDICTION: West Virginia 29-Pittsburgh 23

THE LINE: AT CINCINNATI.....21.....Illinois
EXTRA POINTS: Another HUGE upset pick as I believe the Bearcats are feeling the pressure of being a top 5 team. That, coupled with all the rumors of Brian Kelly going to Notre Dame will be too much against a very underachieving Illini team. This week, Illinois plays like an 8 win team they should be and Cincinnati struggles in Tony Pikes return.

THE LINE: AT CENTRAL MICHIGAN.....13.....Northern Illinois
EXTRA POINTS: If those of you like Tim Tebow, check out Dan Lefevour....I know you won't believe this but I contend that he is BETTER than Tebow ! 11,656 passing yards (4th all time) 92 TD's, 2,802 rushing yards and another 45 TD's on the ground !   His last home game should be somthing to watch !
PREDICTION: Central Michigan 45-Northern Illinois 30

THE LINE: AT BOSTON COLLEGE.....6.....Maryland
EXTRA POINTS: Maryland gave a spirited effort in losing to Florida St. last week. B.C. fell flat on their faces at home against North Carolina.   This week, the Eagles soar !
PREDICTION: Boston College 23-Maryland 12

THE LINE: AT USC.....13.....UCLA
EXTRA POINTS: I think the person setting this line has been drinking too much egg nogg and it's not even Christmas ! The Bruins are trending upward and the Trojans have been deplorable !   Barkley has hit the freshman wall and the defense is vastly overated (especially safety Taylor Mays).
PREDICTION: UCLA 26-USC 23

THE LINE: AT WASHINGTON.....14.....Washington St.
EXTRA POINTS: The Huskies should run and pass all over the Cougars in the annual "Apple Cup" game. Look for Jake Locker to have a HUGE game through the air and running as the Huskies win their 4th game of the year.

MARQUEE MATCHUP OF THE WEEK

THE LINE: AT L.S.U....3.....Arkansas
EXTRA POINTS: Why is this the Marquee Matchup of the Week ? Because yours truly will be reporting LIVE from Baton Rouge ! I leave for New Orleans tomorrow and make the 58 mile drive to Tiger Country on Saturday morning. Five hours of tailgaiting, I'm wondering if I'll be in any condition to watch the game ? Ryan Mallett is playing like the BEST quarterback in the SEC (sorry Tim Tebow). Unfortunately, the Tigers will pressure him into some mistakes and hopefully the Tiger offense gets going in the right direction after last weeks clock mismanagement meltdown !
PREDICTION: L.S.U. 37-Arkansas 31

THE LINE: Miami.....5 1/2....AT SOUTH FLORIDA
EXTRA POINTS: The Bulls shocked Florida St. earlier, can they do the same to Miami ? I don't think so...I like the Hurricanes to win it by a touchdown and Jacory Harris to finally find the golden touch that has been missing the past few weeks.

THE LINE: AT OKLAHOMA 9 1/2.....Oklahoma St.
EXTRA POINTS: The Sooners by 9 1/2 ?   C'mon, the is the "Bedlam Game" and there is NOWAY Coach Stoops is going to have his Sooners firing on all cylindars !   Not sure if Cowboy QB Zac Robinson will play, but his backup Brandon Weeden played well in leading the Pokes to a comeback win over Colorado last week.
PREDICTION: Oklahoma 36-Oklahoma St. 30

THE LINE: AT GEORGIA TECH.....7.....Georgia
EXTRA POINTS: Remember last year ?   The Yellowjackets run up 410 yards rushing...they might have more this year ! Georgia has been in a word, DISSAPOINTING !   Tech also gears up for the ACC Title game against Clemson next week.
PREDICTION: Georgia Tech 40-Georgia 27

THE LINE: Clemson.....3.....AT SOUTH CAROLINA
EXTRA POINTS: Clemson is already assured a spot in next weeks ACC Title Game. Another huge rivalry game and I like the South Carolina defense to win this.

THE LINE:  AT STANFORD.....10.....Notre Dame
EXTRA POINTS: If Notre Dame does bring back Charlie, they are not as smart as they think they are. Then again, they did give Weis a 10 year contract extension after his second year ?   Touchdown Jesus has now been replaced by Field Goal Jesus.   Stanford coming off a dissapointing loss to California last week. The Irish are floundering. Hey, I heard Jimmy Clausen got into a late night fight (at 2:30 a.m.) in a restaurant off campus ? What establishmen is open that late ? Oh yeah....Clausen feared no better than Miguel Cotto (see Manny Pacquio).

Down the stretch they come !   We're almost at the finish line for another season of college football. Incredible how quickly the season has progressed. Some traditional rivalries on the horizon as well as conference championships.

THE LINE: AT BOSTON COLLEGE.....3 1/2.....North Carolina
EXTRA POINTS: This is a serious head scratcher. It's that famous horror flick, Doctor Jekyll & Mister Hyde, which team will be which this week ? I guess I'll take the home team to win it in overtime.
PREDICTION: Boston College 26-North Carolina 20

THE LINE: Oregon.....6.....AT ARIZONA
EXTRA POINTS: If the Ducks can win out they will be in the Rose Bowl. If Arizona wins out they "might" have a shot.  A very competitive game but I just like the Ducks offense a little better than Mike Stoops defense.
PREDICTION: Oregon 33-Arizona 24

THE LINE: AT MISSISSIPPI.....4.....L.S.U.
EXTRA POINTS: How is L.S.U. a 4 point underdog ? Aren't they ranked 9th in the country ? Isn't Ole' Miss struggling and QB Jevan Snead inconsistent ? All being said, I like L.S.U. to play a VERY close game and try to control exciting all everything Dexter McCluster. I like Ole' Miss but closer than 4.

THE LINE: Rutgers.....8.....AT SYRACUSE
EXTRA POINTS: This one should be the easiest pick of them all ! Sorry Renee, your Orange might be in a neck and neck race with Washington St. for worst team of the year.   Look out for Rugters freshman QB Tom Savage..he is going to be a really good one !
PREDICTION: Rutgers 34-Syracuse 20

LOCK OF THE WEEK

THE LINE: AT NOTRE DAME.....6.....Connecticut
EXTRA POINTS: Charlie is in trouble. I have picked the Irish and they have won for me (losing their games but covering !). This week the wide receiver duo of Golden Tate and Michael Floyd light up the Huskies secondary. "IF" by chance Notre Dame loses this game, Weis will be on life support...please see below !!!!
PREDICTION: 37-Connecticut 17

THE LINE: AT SOUTH FLORIDA.....11 1/2.....Louisville
EXTRA POINTS: If this were the Rick Pittino led Cardinals...I'd have Louisville in a rout...unfortunately, it's football. South Florida has slipped badly after reaching Top 15 status. They take out their frustrations on the Cards.
PREDICTION: South Florida 36-Louisville 17

THE LINE: AT NEBRASKA.....16 1/2.....Kansas St.
EXTRA POINTS: If the Huskers win this one, they clinch the Big 12 North. If Kansas St. wins this one they become bowl eligible. 16 1/2 is a lot of points !   I like Nebraska to win it outright but closer than the spread.
PREDICTION: Nebraska 34-Kansas St. 23

THE LINE: T.C.U.....31 1/2.....at Wyoming
EXTRA POINTS: Now I'm not saying that the Cowboys are going to shock the college football world BUT they will keep it close for a half. Remember, this is the same Wyoming team that trailed the Texas Longhorns 13-10 at halftime !   The Horned Frogs will pull away in the second half, but 31 1/2 points ????
PREDICTION: T.C.U. 40-Wyoming 14

THE LINE: AT IOWA.....10....Minnesota
EXTRA POINTS: The Hawkeyes did show some guts last week playing Ohio St. into overtime before coming up short. James Vandenberg will be a better QB than Ricky Stanzi....he should be able to get Iowa over the hump against slumping Minnesota.
PREDICTION: Iowa 29-Minnesota 13

THE LINE: Ohio St.....12.....AT MICHIGAN
EXTRA POINTS: This is touted as being the biggest rivalry game in the country.   Not much of one lately as Jim Tressel has beaten the Wolverines 7 out of 8 times !   With the way the teams are trending, I just don't see it being that close. But, it wouldn't shock me to see the Wolverines in it !
PREDICTION: Ohio St. 35-Michigan 20

THE LINE: AT FLORIDA ST.....19.....Maryland
EXTRA POINTS: What am I drinking ?   I'm actually thinking of picking Florida St. ?   That only means ONE thing...Maryland is terrible ! The Terps and playing like Twerps !   Check out E.J. Manuel....the freshman QB of the Noles'...he has a gun and can run !
PREDICTON: Florida St. 43-Maryland 17

THE LINE: AT GEORGIA.....9.....Kentucky
EXTRA POINTS: The Bulldogs have played their way to a 6-4 record..which only means they have played sub par football. When Mark Richt can find a quarterback, the Dawgs will be back. Unfortunately that won't be till next year.   That being said, the overall talent for Georgia HAS to finally take effect !
PREDICTION: Georgia 27-Kentucky 17

THE LINE: AT B.Y.U.....10....Air Force
EXTRA POINTS: The Cougars have been dissapointing considering their opening week upset win over Oklahoma. They got blown out by T.C.U. and the Falcons will give them problems, especially on the ground. Max Hall to pass on Air Force and win it by 2 touchdowns.
PREDICTION: B.Y.U. 38-Air Force 24

EXTRA POINTS: "The Game"..another classic rivalry. Anyone remember the "band" play ? It's only been replayed 1,000 times ! Okay, Stanford coming off a HUGE win over USC. Letdown city....I like the Bears to upset Stanford and give Oregon a clear path to the Rose Bowl (if the Ducks can take care of business).

Surprises & Dissapointments

There have been some pleasant surprises this season, most notably the undefeated runs of T.C.U. and Cincinnati, the exciting passing game of the Houston Cougars and the best start to a season by the Pitt Panthers since the Dan Marino days.

But perhaps the most amazing college football story resides in Philadelphia, PA where the Temple Owls...yes you heard correctly, the Temple Owls are riding a eight game winning streak and have a legit shot at winning the MAC Conference Championship. The Owls have been led by exciting freshman running back Bernard Pierce, a nearby product of the Philadelphia prep circles, rushing for 1,349 yards and 15 TD's (with two more possible games remaining). Head Coach and former Penn St. Tight End, Al Golden has done wonders with a program that hasn't played in a Bowl game since the 1979 Garden State Bowl game against California which they won 28-17. As of this writing, it looks like Temple will match up with Central Michigan in the MAC Championship Game.

Now for some dissapointments. There are many so lets have at it. Lets take my "Overated University" first, the USC Trojans. With consensus TOP 5 Talent, the Trojans have completely fallen apart, especially on defense, Petey's side of the ball. Giving up 140 points combined to Oregon St., Oregon and Stanford does not bode well for the Men of Troy. How about those good ole' Georgia Bulldogs, a pre-season top 12 pick, playing incredibly inconsistent football and with a record of 6-4. Now, at some places 6 wins and bowl eligibility is a positive, not at Georgia ! They are used to competing for the SEC Championship and having 9-10 or 11 wins per season. The Sooners....even with Bradford in parts of games they lost their opener to Brigham Young and also to Texas. Currently Oklahoma sits at 6-4 and a mid level bowl invite should be in the offering (maybe they can play Georgia ?). How about Notre Lame ? With all this talent, all Charlie can manage is 6-4 ? He has NEVER beaten a Top 10 team and is 1-16 against teams ranked ? I think even Gerry Faust did better than that ! I know Bob Davie and Ty Willingham did the same and they got canned ! I can hear the whispers....Urban Meyer (he has always said it's his "dream" job). How about Ole' Miss ? Even though they are 7-3, they were supposed to be a potential BCS team. With the way Jevan Snead has played, it's amazing they have 7 wins !

FINAL: Pittsburgh 27-Notre Dame 22
Freshman running back Dion Lewis continues to impress as he ran for 153 yards (6th straight 100 yard game) and the Pitt defense pressured Irish QB Jimmy Clausen into a late game fumble that sealed the deal for the Panthers. Memo to Charlie Weis, better get your resume prepared...you may be looking sooner than later.

THE LINE: AT USC.....11.....Stanford (WIN)
FINAL: Stanford 55-USC 21
Toby Gerhart jumped right back into Heisman consideration as he rambled through the OVERATED Trojans defense for 178 yards and 3 TD's. Cardinal quarterback Andrew Luck also threw for a pair of scores as Stanford handed the Trojans their worst home loss since 1966. OUCH !

THE LINE: UCLA.....18.....AT WASHINGTON ST. (WIN)
FINAL: UCLA 43-Washington St. 7
The UCLA Bruins beat up on poor Washington St. on the Cougars home field. QB Kevin Prince accounted for 404 yards of total offense and 2 TD's. The anemic Wazzu offense netted a total of 181 yards and 7 first downs......sad, sad, sad !

THE LINE: Clemson.....7.....AT N.C. STATE (LOSS)
FINAL: Clemson 43-N.C. State 23
C.J. Spiller also vaulted his name into Heisman consideration as he ran for a touchdown, caught a pass for a touchdown and also threw for a touchdown. Is there ANYTHING this kid can't do ? One more win will clinch a date with Georgia Tech in the ACC Title Game.

THE LINE: Georgia Tech.....10 1/2.....AT DUKE (WIN)
FINAL: Georgia Tech 49-Duke 10
The Ramblin' Wreck was at it again....the countries top russhing team was led by standout back Jonathan Dwyer's 110 yards and 2 TD's. Overall, Tech ran for over 300 yards for the 6th straight game ! QB Josh Nesbitt showed he can do more than just run as he threw for 195 yards and 2 TD's in the rout.

THE LINE: AT T.C.U.....17.....Utah (LOSS)
FINAL: T.C.U. 55-Utah 28
I said that "IF" the Horned Frogs (which is actually a horned lizzard) beat Utah by more than 17, they deserved a shot at the BCS Championship......they did and they do !   Factoring in offense (rushing and passing) defense and special teams play, they match up against anyone (yes...that includes Florida, Alabama and Texas). T.C.U. piled up 32 first down and 549 total yards against a very good defensive team. Assuming they win out against Wyoming and winless New Mexico..a BCS shot is guaranteed.

THE LINE: AT MISSISSIPPI.....3.....Tennessee (LOSS)
FINAL: Mississippi 42-Tennessee 17
Welcome to the "Dexter McCluster Show" . The 5'-9" 170 pound all everything ran for 282 yards and finished with 324 all purpose yards and 4 TD's in the blowout win. A sorry performance by the Vols.

THE LINE: Nebraska.....3 1/2.....AT KANSAS (WIN)
FINAL: Nebraska 31-Kansas 17
Led by Roy Helu's 156 yards, the Cornhuskers moved one step closer to a date with Texas in the Big 12 Championship game. If Nebraska beats Kansas St. next week, they will have earned that spot. Lets go Huskers, take down those Longhors...wouldn't you love to see a T.C.U.-Florida/Alabama game ?

THE LINE: AT OHIO ST.....15.....Iowa (LOSS)
FINAL: Ohio St. 27-Iowa 24 (OT)
Devan Barkley kicked a 39 yard field goal to win it for the Buckeyes in overtime. If the Iowa QB, James Vandenburg could have thrown more to his Hawkeye receivers than the Ohio St. secondary, Iowa would have won this game in regulation.

THE LINE: Florida.....15..... AT SOUTH CAROLINA (WIN)
FINAL: Florida 24-South Carolina 14
The Gators hung on thanks to an opportunistic defense to take down South Carolina. Tim Tebow was yet again "average" leading the Gators offense. No matter if Florida wins the BCS Championship again, he is NOT deserving of the Heisman.

THE LINE: AT ARKANSAS.....14 1/2.....Troy (WIN)
FINAL: Arkansas 56-Troy 20
Ryan Mallett broke the Arkansas single season passing recored throwing for 405 yards and 5 TD's (I boldly predicted 300 + and 3 or 4 TD's).   If only head coach Bobby Petrino could field a defense, the Razorbacks could mount a serious challenge in the SEC...maybe next year ?

THE LINE: AT CINCINNATI.....10.....West Virginia (LOSS)
FINAL: Cincinnati 24-West Virginia 21
Tony Pike came off the bench for throw 2 short TD passes in helping the Bearcats to their 10th straight win over a stingy Mountaneers bunch. HORRIBLE call in this one as the replay officials gave the Bearcats Isiah Pead a TD after initially ruling a fumble on the play.   WHY do they use replay when they get the CALL WRONG !

EXTRA POINTS: Charlie Weis needs this game and he needs to win it big for job security. The Panthers are on a roll but do not have the defensive speed to beat the Irish. Pitt will run all over Notre Dame, but take Clausen's arm and Tate and Floyd's ability to stretch the field.
PREDICTION: Notre Dame 34-Pittsburgh 17

EXTRA POINTS: Normally, I would take Stanford easily, but they will suffer a letdown after a HUGE win against Oregon last week. Trojans quarterback Barkley coming off a horific week. I like the Trojans to win the game outright but not by more than 10 points.

THE LINE: UCLA.....18.....AT WASHINGTON ST.
EXTRA POINTS: Washington St. may be the worst team in college football this year.   The Bruins have underachieved after a promising start. I like Neuheisels group to run all over the Cougars.

EXTRA POINTS: The Bearcats barely got by UConn last weekend in an offensive shootout. Their normally stout defense surrendered 48 points !   This week they do a little better. Mountaineers RB Noel Devine has been slowed by an ankle injury and he will not carry his normal work load.
PREDICTION: Cincinnati 37-West Virginia 20

UPSET SPECIAL OF THE WEEK

THE LINE: Clemson.....7.....AT N.C. STATE
EXTRA POINTS: This almost always happens. Clemson gets on a roll with superior talent, looks like a top 10 team, then stumbles coming down the stretch. That begins on Saturday. Tom O'Briens band of Wolfpack shock the ACC and jeopardize the Tigers chances at clinching the ACC Atlantic Title.
PREDICTION: N.C. State 31-Clemson 26

THE LINE: Georgia Tech.....10 1/2.....AT DUKE
EXTRA POINTS: Duke has surprised many and has a legitimate shot at a bowl game this year. Quarterback Thaddeus Lewis can throw the ball around with the best the ACC has to offer. Problem in this game is the Triple Option run by Josh Nesbitt..they are unstoppable and I don't see the Devils slowing it down. Look for a TON of points and yards in this game !

MARQUEE MATCHUP OF THE WEEK

THE LINE: AT T.C.U.....17.....Utah
EXTRA POINTS: The Horned Frogs come in ranked 4th in the country. HUGE game for a possible BCS Championship berth and BCS game. I like T.C.U. at home but 17 points to a VERY good Utah team, nope. "IF" T.C.U. beats Utah by more than those points, they prove to me and everyone in the nation that they are a legitimate TOP 3 TEAM ! Remember, Utah comes in with only one loss, at Oregon where they played the Ducks tough. The Utes have switched to freshman quarterback Jordan Wynn who is running the option attack better than Terrence Cain was earlier in the season. He will have to be very weary of All-American defensive end, Jerry Hughes (team leading 9 sacks). Take the Utes and those 17 points.
PREDICTION: T.C.U. 31-Utah 17

THE LINE: AT MISSISSIPPI.....3.....Tennessee
EXTRA POINTS: Right now, the Tennessee defense is playing better than anyone (except T.C.U.). Mississippi has been probably the most dissapointing team in the SEC this season. Quarterback Jevan Snead was being touted as a pre season Heisman candidate AND possible first round pick....Who would have thought Vols QB Jonathan Crompton would be outplaying Snead at this point in the season ?? What happened ???   I like the Vols to win it outright.

THE LINE: Nebraska.....3 1/2.....AT KANSAS
EXTRA POINTS: The Huskers NEED this game to stay with Kansas St. for Big 12 North honors.   Kansas has slumped in recent weeks as their offensive line has surrendered pressure against Todd Reising. I like the Huskers defense to win this one. Per Huskers fan Alex (a blog follower) I propose the following: 7 field goals and a safety !

THE LINE: AT OHIO ST.....15.....Iowa
EXTRA POINTS: What happened to the Hawkeyes ?   Last week they were ranked 5th, now they're 15 points dawgs ? Somebody knows something I don't !   The Buckeyes have been playing great football the past three weeks. Pryor has been a playmaker. Ohio St. will win this...but the question is, can they roll up points against a pretty good Iowa defense ? ANSWER: YES

EXTRA POINTS: Spurrier always plays his former team tough. The Gamecocks defense should keep this closer than the experts think. I like the Gators, but by just 2 touchdowns.

EXTRA POINTS: Bobby Petrino has done an excellent job with the Razorbacks in his second year at the helm. Lots of offense in this one, but Ryan Mallette should have a HUGE game for Arkansas throwing the ball...look for 300 + yards and 3 or 4 TD's.

Stanford running back Toby Gerhart set a Cardinal rushing record by running for 223 yards and 3 TD's leading the Cardinal. Oregon suffered the post big game let down after the USC game.

The Buckeyes defense controlled the game and Terrelle Pryor threw a pair of touchdowns in the win. Pryor also rushed for a score as he continues to gain confidence and the Ohio St. coaches open up the playbook each week.

The Hurricanes outscored Virginia 28-0 in the second half to romp the Cavaliers. Craig Cooper rushed for 152 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Even though I had this as my "Upset Special of the Week"...I still had the Sun Devils and those 11 points. USC looks like a tired and spent team. They only managed 11 first downs and 258 yards of total offense. Damian Williams 75 yard screen pass touchdown was the difference.

Okay, this was my "LOCK OF THE WEEK"...how could the Wolverines lose their FIFTH straight Big 10 game, at HOME against a poor Purdue defense ? EASY, the Wolverines defense is a pathetic bunch and former Syracuse coach and first year coordinator Greg Robinson should be replaced ! TERRIBLE SCHEMES !

A 29 yard Kevin Craft to Terrence Austin hookup won it as the Bruins made a nice fourth quarter comeback. Another close loss by the Huskies....they are getting better and WILL be Bowl Eligible next year ! I guarantee it !

QB Sean Canfield threw for 342 yards and 2 TD's and the Beavers blew out the Golden Bears. Very scary scene after Jahvid Bests' 7 yard TD run, he landed on his head and left the field in on a stretcher and will be out for up to two weeks with a serious concussion.

FINAL SCORE: Alabama 24-L.S.U. 15
After being bottled up in the first half by the L.S.U. defense, Mark Ingram came alive in the second half rambling for 106 yards and a Greg McElroy to Julio Jones 73 yard screen pass ended up being the difference.

EXTRA POINTS: Rich Rodriguez needs this one BAD !   The Wolverine fans need this one BAD ! The state of Michigan needs this one BAD ! And Wayne needs this one BAD !   I can't see this one being close. Wolverine pride wins this by 12.

EXTRA POINTS: Even though Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi has lead the Hawkeyes to a perfect record, he has not put together four full quarters.   He'll have his customary implosion somewhere in the second half but then drag the Hawkeyes to another improbable victory.

EXTRA POINTS: Battle of the defenses. I just don't think the Tigers have enough offense to get it done in Tuscaloosa, at least this year. The Tide will stuff the L.S.U. ground game and force Jordan Jefferson to win it through the air. I just don't see it happening. On the flip side, Tide quarterback Greg McElroy has struggled the past two games and hopes a week off can get him back on track. This one really comes down to the the Alabama defense and running back Mark Ingram making just enough plays to win it for Bama'. Roll Tide Roll, by 10.

BRANDON "SPIKES" GEORGIA PLAYER IN UGLY INCIDENT

The talk show lines have been lit up this week (even in Boston, MA, where college football hardly raises a pulse) not about the BCS rankings or some exciting games. No, it's all Brandon Spikes and his attempt to eye gouge (isn't that a WWE wrestling tactic made famous by the late great "Captain" Lou Albano ?) Georgia freshman Washaun Ealey during last Saturdays heated game between Florida and Georgia. Gators coach Urban Meyer is "suspending" Spikes (who is an All-American Linebacker) for the first half of this Saturdays game against lowly Vanderbilt. I think in this instance, the punishment does not fit the crime....I'm not saying suspend him for the remainder of the season but I think a whole game off against Vanderbilt and attending some anger management classes might be in order. Interesting turn of events as this week, the victim in all this, Ealey a 5'-11", 210 pound freshman running back from Twin City, GA, has come out and said he doesn't think Spikes should even be suspended and he was never "eye gouged". The fact remains, Brandon Spikes stepped over the line of using good judgement and poor sportsmanship and should have to sit at least ONE game for his sorry act. Some completely out of touch "Talk Radio Shows"...I won't mention any names... (WEEI Sports Radio in Boston) have even gone as far as to say that Gators coach Urban Meyer "teaches" this kind of stuff to his players ???? That couldn't be further from the truth ! Look, bottom line is football is an extremely physical and emotional game, tempers flare and players get carried away with the moment. Lets just hope Brandon Spikes understands the consequences of his actions and if football doesn't work out at the next level, Vince McMahon will be waiting ringside.

WILLIAMS QUITS SYRACUSE ORANGE

Junior Wide Receiver, Mike Williams walked into coach Doug Marrone's office last weekend and abruptly quit the team. Williams was averaging 106 yards per game ranking 6th nationally and has 20 career touchdown receptions tying him for second best all time with Marvin Harrison. This isn't the first time Williams has encountered problems at Syracuse. He missed all of last year due to academic issues and has missed practices various times this season. Most N.F.L. scouting bureau's have Williams as an early to mid second round selection in the 2010 Draft. It will be interesting to see how this latest incident has hindered his potentially high draft status next year. Stay tuned on this one, I have a feeling there is more than meets the eye "gouge" (my apologies to the Gator fans).

Jared Crick Defensive End Nebraska

The Huskers may be struggling, but the "other" Nebraska lineman single handidly demolished the Baylor Bears last Saturday. Crick had a team and conference record 5 sacks to go along with 10 solo tackles, 7 of them for losses. If only the Cornhusker offense could play up to these standards !

Jeremiah Masoli Quarterback Oregon

As the USC Trojans found out the hard way, Masoli was a handful in leading the Ducks to a 47-20 on Saturday night. The Junior dual threat quarterback completed 19 of 31 passes for 221 yards and a TD and ran through the Trojans defense for 164 yards and another score.

Landry Jones and the Sooners jumped out to a quick 21-0 first quarter lead and held off a furious second half Kansas St. rally to beat the Wildcats in Norman, OK. It looks like Oklahoma will not be in a BCS game this season and this loss for Kansas St. hurts them in their chance to take control of the Big-12 North.

Can't quite figure this one out. For the first three games of the season, Vols quarterback Jonathan Crompton was terrible, now he's playing like an all conference QB ? The Gamecocks looked sluggish and just beat down while Tennessee continues to improve every week. Memo to the rest of the SEC, the Vols will be VERY good next year.

The Beavers nearly blew a 19-3 fourth quarter lead and needed a James Rodgers 17 yard end around TD run to save the day for the Beavers. This loss marks the third straight Pac-10 setback for the Bruins.

The Gators showed their offense isn't a work in progress as they trashed the Bulldogs in their annual "Worlds Largest Cocktail Party" in Jacksonville. This was Tim Tebow's last game at his hometown and he didn't dissapoint, breaking the SEC rushing touchdown record previously held by Georgia RB Herschel Walker. The two were tied at 49 until Tebow's 23 yard TD run in the second quarter. Tebow also threw for a pair of touchdowns to Riley Cooper and ran for an additional TD in the third quarter. This is Georgia's worst weason since 1997.

FINALLY......I win one !   This game PROVES the Trojans are vastly overated (as I've been saying all season long). They are not as physical, fast or explosive as everyone states. Their supposed 5 star recruits are playing like 2 stars !   Jeremiah Massoli is playing incredible football and the Ducks now have a stranglhold on the Pac-10 and a BCS berth. LaMichael James torched the Trojans defense for 183 and Massoli ran for 163 and a TD and also passed for 222 and a score. I think the Trojans will stumble one more time before it's all said and done. The Ducks still have two difficult games left, a trip to Tucson and Arizona and the "Civil War" battle with rival Oregon St.

All I know is the Wolverines stunk the joint out !   Illinois is one of the WORST teams in college football and decimated Michigan by 24 ? The once promising season for Coach Rodriguez is turning into a nightmare. Do I dare say it ???   We miss you Lloyd Carr ???? Wayne what in Maize & Blue is happening ?

Zach Collaros continues to impress with another outstanding performance, this time at the expense of the Syracuse Orange. Collaros completed 22 of 28 for 295 yards and 4 TD's. Word is that Tony Pike may be ready next week....I'm not sure I make the switch the way Collaros is playing.

The Texas defense completely controlled the game intercepting Cowboys quarterback Zac Robinson four times including two for touchdowns as the Longhorns rolled. Texas now has a clear path to the Big-12 Championship game. The only remaining test could come from Texas A & M in the traditional rivalry game. With the way the Texas defense is playing, I think they will play in the BCS Championship game (as I predicted at the beginning of the season). Hey...with the way this week went, I need to regain my confidence !

John Clay ran for 123 yards and three touchdowns as the Badgers shut out the Boilermakers 37-0 for their first Big-10 shutout since 1999.

One last thought....do you think USC Coach Pete Carrol will EVER vacation in the state of Oregon ? He has lost his last four games dating back to 2004, two each to the Ducks and Beavers. It was a Halloween nightmare for the Trojans !

EXTRA POINTS: Since losing their opening game against Boise St., the Ducks have been unbeatable and on Saturday they take control of the Pac-10 by upsetting the Trojans. Oregon coach Chip Kelly has done a remarkable job and next to Cincinnati's Brian Kelly has been the best coach this year in college football. USC has not won in Autzen Stadium since 2004 and this will not be a repeat. Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli is playing like the Heisman candidate I touted him to be. Tight End Ed Dixon is dangerous and freshman running back LaMichael James is one of the best two freshman tailbacks in the nation (next to Pitt's Dion Lewis). The crowd will be amped up for this one and USC will lose yet another Pac-10 game. This is the game where Trojan QB Matt Barkley will play like the freshman he is.

EXTRA POINTS: This is the week the Longhorns finally put a full game together. Colt McCoy has been plagued by nagging injuries and the flu this season. With a huge performance, McCoy will jump to the head of the Heisman class and Texas could make up ground on SEC twins, Florida and Alabama.

This weeks loathing comment, HEISMAN VOTING !

I do remember back in 1993 when an OVER hyped freshman quarterback from Berwick, PA named Ron Powlus first stepped foot on the Notre Lame campus.   Many of the Irish faithful had cemented his legacy without Powlus ever playing a down !   Four years later...he fell flat on his face !

How about the 1987 Heisman Winner, Tim Brown ? NOT !   There is NO WAY he should have EVER won that award in 1987 !   Notre Dame was a very AVERAGE team going 8-3 playing their usual listless schedule. The award that year should have gone to Syracuse quarterback Don MacPherson who guided the Orangeman (as they were known back then) to an undefeated season while setting Syracuse passing records for yards, touchdowns and completion percentage.

Lets delve further into history...Paul Hornung and the 1956 Heisman.....okay, Hornung did lots of things well, running, receiving, kicking and punting....oh, Notre Lame finished 2-8 that year.   He did not lead the country in any one of those particular categories....ever hear of a running back named JIM BROWN ?????   Nuff said !   Now, Hornung should have won the Heisman for sleeping around with married woman (alleged) and his gambling habits (fact).

Oh yeah...least I forget, I hate Lou Holtz ! Has ANYONE ever seen his "Doctor Lou" segment on ESPN ???? Talk about Notre LAME ! Either become a preacher, minister or rabbi (great, now I'll have the wrath of all my hebrew followers), but stop with the ridiculous PEP talks and incoherent ramblings ! Besides, with that slurred speech impediment, I can't understand a darn thing he says ! I just wish Mark May would pick him up and pile drive him through the floor !

In Saturday's 40-37 overtime victory over Miami the senior speedster totalled 316 all purpose yards including a 90 yard TD kickoff return and a 56 yard TD pass reception from quarterback Kyle Parker.

Dexter McCluster WR/RB Ole Miss

McCluster rushed for 123 yards and caught 7 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown in leading the Rebels past SEC rival Arkansas, 30-17.

Terrence Cody Defensive Tackle Alabama

The mammoth 6'-6", 355 pound tackle single handedly beat upset minded Tennessee by blocking two field goals, the final attempt on the last play of the game to preserve the Tide win and keep their unbeaten season in tact.

Terrelle Pryor Quarterback Ohio St.

I've ridden Pryor hard all season but he finally put together a solid four quarters as the Buckeyes cruised over Minnesota, 38-7. Pryor threw for 239 yards and 2 TD's and added 104 yards on the ground and a touchdown.

The Boise St. defense forced six turnovers that led to 30 Broncos points.   Quarterback Kellen Moore threw for 5 touchdowns. Although still remaining unbeaten, Boise St. may drop in the BCS rankings due to a lack of top notch competition.

Ricky Stanzi hit Marvin McNutt for a 7 yard touchdown as time expired to keep the Hawkeyes undefeated and in the running for a Big 10 Championship as well as BCS Championship.

The Fighting Irish did it again winning in the final minutes over B.C.   Jimmy Clausen's 36 yard touchdown pass to Golden Tate provided the winning margin. The Eagles blew numerous chances to take control fumbling at the Notre Dame 1 yard line and also being intercepted 3 times in the second half.

Terrelle Pryor finally put together a complete game throwing for 239 yards and 2 TD's and rushing for 104 yards and a touchdown as Ohio St. beat up on the Gophers. Whatever game plan the Ohio St. coaches came up with in this one, keep Pryor doing the same things.

Despite Nick Foles' 3 interceptions, the Wildcats rode a stingy defense, holding the Bruins to 211 total yards in winning their third straight Pac-10 game.

The Yellow Jackets ground attack ripped up the Cavaliers defense to the tune of 447 yards as Tech romped in an ACC showdown. With this win and Miami's loss to Clemson, Georgia Tech controls their fate in the ACC Coastal Division.

Third string tailback Allen Bradford ran for a career high 147 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Trojans held off a late Oregon St. rally to get the win.   A huge one for USC next week as the Trojans, ranked 6th in the BCS head to Eugene, OR and a date with the Oregon Ducks for control of the Pac-10.

This was a major shocker as Andy Dalton threw for over 200 yards and 3 touchdowns and the Horned Frogs defense sacked Cougars quarterback Max Hall 5 times. Look for T.C.U. to make a jump in the BCS rankings, possibly passing Boise St. or Cincinnati.

Eddie Wide's touchdown run in overtime gave the Utes the victory.   Utah Lineback Stevenson Sylvester sacked Air Force quarterback Connor Dietz on 4th and 1 on the Utah goaline to preserve the win. Next up for Utah (BCS 19th ranking) a matchup with red hot T.C.U.

EXTRA POINTS: The Trojans try to avenge last years 27-21 defeat at the hands of the Beavers. USC should win but not by the spread. I like Beavers tailback Jacquizz Rodgers outside speed and the Oregon St. special teams to keep this closer than the experts think. Letdown alert for USC after last weeks big win at Notre Dame.

EXTRA POINTS: The Mormons versus the Horned Frogs, sounds like a religious horror flick ! Okay, T.C.U. comes in undefeated and ranked in the BCS Top 10. Great defense and playing lights out. On the flipside, this is the Cougars biggest game of the year. They passed against Oklahoma and failed miserably with Florida St. I think they will pass the test and win this one outright. At least for this week, the spotlight is showing bright on the Mountain West Conference. Now, I love T.C.U. and I want them to win this badly, but I don't see them having an answer for Max Hall, Harvey Unga or McKay Jacobson. The B.Y.U. defense will be the dominate one in this game, I like B.Y.U. BIG !

EXTRA POINTS: Staying in the Mountain West, the Falcons of Air Force will give Utah fits but in the end lose a tight one. Utah has been winning games lately but not playing up to their ability or talent level. Take Air Force to ground the Utes passing game and keep it very close.

EXTRA POINTS: The Wolverines have stumbled a bit lately losing two in a row (sorry Wayne, I can't count the Deleware St. win as an actual game !). Forcier is healthy and Penn St. has shown a total inhability to play any kind of offense against a decent caliber Division 1 team. Look for Nittany Lions quarterback Clark to have another "off" day and Michigan pulls off the shocker in the Big House.

EXTRA POINTS: The Sooners coming off another loss to Texas and Kansas being knocked from the unbeaten ranks by the lowly Colorado Buffaloes. What will this week bring ? The Jayhawks can certainly move the ball through the air with Todd Reising and Dez Briscoe but will be facing a very talented defense. Landry Jones steps up, as for the remainder of the season, he is the Oklahoma starting quarterback. In the end, I think Bob Stoops and Sooner pride win this one and by 10 points.

EXTRA POINTS: Cincinnati Head Coach Brian Kelly is my vote for "Coach of the Year". Who else could lose ten starters on defense, three offensive lineman and a starting running back and be better the next year ? Louisville and coach Steve Kragthorpe are sliding badly and even though Bearcats quarterback Tony Pike is still a game time decision, I like Kelly and company to whip up on the Cardinals.

EXTRA POINTS: I should be AT THIS GAME..I had tickets....but imagine a one way flight from Baton Rouge to Boston for $1,020 ??? I love the Tigers, not that much ! Next year ! Back to this game, Auburn has lost two in a row and already the critics are calling for Gene Chizik's head. The L.S.U. Tigers have already lost one Saturday night game, they will cover the points with a comfortable margin of victory.

The Boston College sophomore running back exploded for 264 yards and five touchdowns in a 52-21 rout of N.C. State. Of the 264 yards, Harris rushed for 205 of them out of the "wildcat" formation.

Another sophomore sensation, Alabama's Mark Ingram torched the usually stingy South Carolina defense for a career high 246 yards and a touchdown leading the Tide to a hard fought 20-6 SEC win over the rival Gamecocks. With this performance, Ingram solidifies himself as a top Heisman contender.

First year starting quarterback Nick Foles passed for 415 and three touchdowns as the Wildcats overcame a second half deficit to beat Stanford, 43-38 in Tucson.

This topsy turvy college football season continues, not a bad week going 8-4-2. Lets take a look at the wrap ups from week 7:

THE LINE:     Cincinnati by 2 1/2 (LOSS)
Quarterback Tony Pike threw two touchdown passes before leaving the game with an apparent left arm injury leading CINCINNATI 34-17 in over SOUTH FLORIDA and control of the Big East. Backup quarterback Zach Collaros took off on a quarterback draw for a 75 yard touchdown icing the win.

THE LINE:     Texas by 3 (TIE)
In my Marquee Matchup of the Week, TEXAS got a 32 yard field goal from Hunter Lawrence at 12:43 of the fourth quarter as the Longhorns hung on to beat OKLAHOMA 16-13.   Sooners quarterback was knocked out of the game in the first quarter suffering the same shoulder injury that shelved him for the first 3 1/2 games. Even with the Horns' winning, Colt McCoy did not put up even close to Heisman type numbers finishing 21 for 39 for 127 yards (1 TD, 1 INT).

THE LINE:     T.C.U. by 22 (Loss)
TCU used a punishing defense to whip COLORADO ST. 44-6. The Horned Frogs gear up for their biggest game of the season this Saturday at Provo, UT and the Cougars of B.Y.U. The T.C.U. defense gave up a total of 182 yards and quarterback Andy Dalton threw for a pair of scores.

THE LINE:     Utah by 16 (Win)
The UTAH Utes got their 600th win in program history playing a very average game before finally pulling away from a terrible U.N.L.V. team 35-15. Not much to report here other than Utah quarterback Terrence Cain threw for two touchdowns.

THE LINE:     Nebraska by 10 (Loss)
My "Lock of the Week" was picked clean by TEXAS TECH as the Red Raiders upset NEBRASKA in Lincoln, NE 31-10. Red Raiders backup quarterback Steven Sheffield threw for one touchdown and the Texas Tech defense confused Huskers' quarterback Zac Lee for 3 quarters. Lee continues to struggle in big games and if this trend continues, Nebraska will have a difficult time winning the Big-12 North.

THE LINE:     Miami, FL by 14 (Win)
Jacory Harris completed 20 of 26 passes for 293 yards and a touchdown in an easy 27-7 win for the Hurricanes of MIAMI over CENTRAL FLORIDA.

THE LINE:     USC by 10 (Win)
The USC Trojans built a huge second half lead and then watched as the NOTRE DAME Fighting Irish made yet another storied comeback before holding off a last second Jimmy Clausen pass to defeat the Irish 34-27. Trojans quarterback Matt Barkley threw for a career high 380 yards (2 TD's, 1 INT). Of course, this game wouldn't end without some controversy as Notre Dame received an extra second on the clock (at the end of regulation) to try one more time to wake up the echoes.....unfortunately for them, they fell on deaf ears !

THE LINE:     Alabama by 17 (Win)
Crimson Tide running back Mark Ingram jumped up into the Heisman race as he galloped for a career high 246 yards (1 TD) leading ALABAMA to a 20-6 victory over the visiting SOUTH CAROLINA Gamecocks. Ingram ran all over the South Carolina defense in keeping the Tide in contro despite a season high four turnovers.   The Alabama defense held the Gamecocks to 278 total yards. Both quarterbacks had very difficult games against each teams stellar defeneses. With this win, I believe that Alabama has cemented themselves at the most complete team in the nation so far.

THE LINE:     Arizona by 5 (TIE)
ARIZONA running back Nate Grigsby raced 57 yards for the winning touchdown as the Wildcats came back from a 15 point 4th quarter deficit, beating STANFORD 43-38. Wildcat quarterback also threw for a career high 415 yards and 3 TD's.

THE LINE:     Arizona St. by 6 1/2 (Win)
Danny Sullivan's 50 yards touchdown pass with no time left shocked the entire stadium and the WASHINGTON Husky defense in a 24-17 ARIZONA ST. win. This win puts the Sun Devils back in contention for a Pac-10 title with the Trojans.

THE LINE:     Michigan St. by 14 (Win)
Kirk Cousins connected on a pair of touchdown strikes to Blair White in the MICHIGAN ST. 24-14 victory over the Wildcats of NORTHWESTERN. Next up for Sparty, a home date with Big-10 leader Iowa.

THE LINE:     Auburn by 13 1/2 (Loss)
Randall Cobbs 4 yard touchdown run sealed the come back victory for KENTUCKY 21-14 over AUBURN. This seven point victory was the Wildcats first over Auburn since 1966. In all, Kentucky rushed for 246 yards and held down the high powered but sputtering Auburn offense.

THE LINE:     Georgia by 8 (Win)
GEORGIA easily handled VANDERBILT taking apart the home town Commodores, 34-10. The Georgia defense which has been disspaointing this season (ranking 110 nationally) came up with three sacks and an interception.

EXTRA POINTS: Both teams come into Thursday nights game ranked and undefeated. Bearcats QB Tony Pike is a leading Heisman candidate. The Cincinnati front will have to contain the South Florida pass rush. This should be a very close game and field position will be key.   I like Cincinnati to win it on a last second field goal.
PREDICTION:     Cincinnati 31-South Florida 30

Saturday Games

THE LINE
At AIR FORCE...............10 1/2...............WYOMING
EXTRA POINTS: I like the ground attack of Air Force to control time of possession but I think Wyoming can stay in the game with quarterback Austyn Carter-Samuels throwing ability. If the weather is as bad as last week, the Cowboys will have difficulties. I'm banking on a close game with Air Force winning by a touchdown.
PREDICTION:     Air Force 34-Wyoming 27

At ARIZONA...............5...............STANFORD
EXTRA POINTS: Stanford suffered a humbling loss at Oregon St. last week. They bounce back against a struggling Arizona team. The Arizona defense is tough to run on but I like Toby Gerhart to rush for 100 hards and freshman QB Andrew Luck to have a big game.
PREDICTON:     Stanford 23-Arizona 17

GEORGIA...............8...............at VANDERBILT
EXTRA POINTS: A must win for the Bulldogs. Georgia got embarrassed last week at Tennessee. This week they turn the tables on Vanderbilt.

MIAMI, FL...............14...............at CENTRAL FLORIDA
EXTRA POINTS: The Canes' should roll. Jacory Harris should add to his aerial stats and the Miami defense will stifle the Golden Knights offense. An easy non-conference win for the Canes'.

At T.C.U...............22...............COLORADO ST.
EXTRA POINTS: Colorado St. won for me last week and although they will lose to the 9th ranked Horned Frogs, they will keep it close for the first half.   T.C.U. might be looking ahead to next weeks meeting with B.Y.U.

LOCK OF THE WEEK

At NEBRASKA..........10...............TEXAS TECH

EXTRA POINTS: The Texas Tech pass happy offense will still generate yards but not points. Nebraskas pass rush will force multiple turnovers and the Nebraska offense, although not potent will do enough to win this one for the Huskers'.

PREDICTION: Nebraska 30-Texas Tech 17

UTAH...............16................at U.N.L.V.

EXTRA POINTS: The Utes should roll in this one. Utah quarterback Terrence Cain is coming off his finest performance of the year and the porous Rebel defense will make it easy. Utah is making a push for another Mountain West Conference title. U.N.L.V. is looking toward next season.

PREDICTION: Utah 43-U.N.L.V. 20

MARQUIS MATCHUP OF THE WEEK

TEXAS...............3...............OKLAHOMA (neutral field)

EXTRA POINTS: The Longhorns have not put together a full 4 quarters. That starts Saturday. The Sooners defense will keep it close for a half, then the Longhorn stampede begins. This game is the season for Oklahoma, they just don't have enough to stay with Texas. Colt McCoy to finally play like a Heisman winner and make a statement. Look for the Longhorn defense to harass Sam Bradford and put the shackles on the Sooners running backs. Texas is one of the three best teams in the country and at games end, Oklahoma will be limp back to Norman, OK licking their wounds.

PREDICTION: Texas 33-Oklahoma 17

At ALABAMA...............17...............SOUTH CAROLINA

EXTRA POINTS: Now I'm not predicting a Tide loss but the way both defenses are capable of playing, look for a defensive struggle with limited points. In the End, Bama' will remain undefeated but this one will test them against an underated South Carolina squad.

PREDICTION: Alabama 20-South Carolina 13

At AUBURN...............13 1/2...............KENTUCKY

EXTRA POINTS: Interesting to see how Auburn will respond to their first loss of the season. Just what the doctor ordered as Kentucky comes calling. Tiger QB Chris Todd should find his rythym and RB Ben Tate could have a big day running the ball.

PREDICTION: Auburn 43-Kentucky 24

At ARIZONA ST...............6 1/2..............WASHINGTON

EXTRA POINTS: After last weeks very emotional victory, the Huskies will suffer a letdown and the Arizona St. defense should slow down Washington QB Jake Locker. The letdown factor leads me to this pick (against my better judgment). Night games in the desert are always a challenge.

PREDICTION: Arizona St. 30-Washington 20

At MICHIGAN ST............14...............NORTHWESTERN

EXTRA POINTS: Fourteen points is just to much to ask the Spartans to cover. Sparty will win another one for "Sparty Girl" but not by the spread. I like an offensive show here, both teams moving up and down the field. In the end, closer than the experts predict.

PREDICTION: Michigan St. 44-Northwestern 38

UPSET PICK OF THE WEEK

USC...............10...............at NOTRE DAME

EXTRA POINTS: I've gone back and forth on this one. USC has won seven games in a row versus the Irish. USC has not given up a touchdown reception yet this season. USC is giving up only 8.6 points per game this season. Regardless, I think the Fighting Irish will not be beat by more than 10 points. Hey, I'm a Notre Dame hater...but I like the matchup with the Trojans this year in particular. From what I've seen all season long, the Trojans seem vastly overated to me. The best offensive line in college, watch closely it just may be Notre Dame that has that distinction. The Fighting Irish defense has been invisible most of the year but they get up bigtime for this showdown. The Irish run the ball effectively against the Trojans setting up Clausen play action passes to Golden Tate and down the middle to sensational 6'-6" Tight End, Kyle Rudolph. Okay, I'm saying it (as much as I HATE SAYING IT). I like Notre Dame to shock the college football world in a game that might not be that close.

Tuesday's News & Notes

After suffering another ACC loss on Saturday to Georgia Tech, legendary Head Coach Bobby Bowden is under fire from the Florida St. fans, alumni and trustees and it's looking more and more like this will be the last year for the iconic coach. This is a coach that has gone 384-141-4 over his career (311-95-4 with the Noles') won two National Championships (see photo on left), won fourteen conference championships and has had an unprecedented string of fourteen straight years of being ranked in the Top 5. Oh and an amazing Bowl record of 21-10-1. But through all of the accomplishments, recent history doesn't lie. The Noles have not finished in the Top 10 since 2001. I believe the year by year downslide began with losing excellent coaches like current Georgia Head Coach, Mark Richt and Chuck Amato (now back on the staff). They were not just great position coaches but excellent recruiters. Also, Florida's rise to power (beginning with Steve Spurrier) and now taken to a new level by Urban Meyer has snatched talent away from Florida St. as well as excellent recruiting by Miami Hurricanes coach Randy Shannon. I am not a big fan of the "Head Coach In Waiting" scenerio. Jimbo Fisher came heavily hyped from his days at L.S.U. and although the offense has clicked this season, has not been consistent. Longtime Defensive Coordinator Mickey Andrews has had less talent to work with and it has showed on the field. The always stingy defensive line is undersized and being physically dominated at the line of scrimmage and although Florida St. does have speed, it is often times undiciplined, jumping patterns and overpursuing allowing for HUGE gains as evidenced by their yards and points given up this year. Bowden deserves better but in this age of "what have you done for me lately" , it's evident that the Seminoles have to go a differnet direction and rebuild their once proud program. I would like to see Bobby Bowden ride off into the Tallahassee sunset happily ever after, but this thing could be long, drawn out and ugly.

Can the Florida Gators win another National Championship without the services of Tim Tebow ? Now, it's not like Tebow is lighting it up this year. Statistically speaking, this is the worst year of his career. The one thing Tebow has always brought to the field is he is a WINNER. It might not be pretty but he gets the job done. It's almost as if he can "will" the Gators to victory, even on those days when everything looks against them. I thought Tebow played well in Saturdays 13-3 victory over a tough L.S.U. Tiger team, especially after not having a full week of practice. I believe the Gators are one of the best 3 teams in the nation but the bottom line is they cannot win the SEC Championship and National Championship without Tim Tebow.

What is going on with Ohio St. quarterback Terrelle Pryor ? I hyped him before the year as did every publication and pre season talk show. So far, very dissapointing. It looks like he has almost regressed ! His poor throwing motion has not changed and although he is completing 56.3% of his passes, from fifteen yards out, that stat drops to 40%. First thing, I don't think this offense suits his talents. I know Pryor wants to be the pro style drop back passer but that is NOT what he is. He needs to be on the run, sprinting right and left, making defenses chase him down. Running quarterback draws and keeping those linebackers close so it can open up the middle of the field. He would be the PERFECT signal caller for a Michigan style offense or West Virginia offense but he is stuck in Columbus. The jury is out on Pryor and more sub par games will only drop his once soaring stock.

Memo to Joe Paterno. Please, Please, Please start scheduling some semi tough non conference teams ! AKRON, SYRACUSE, TEMPLE & EASTERN ILLINOIS (not to diminish those teams but.....) and then take on Iowa at home and are completely shut down offensively and dominated physically. Joe Pa. is 1-7 in his last seven meetings with Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz. I know Paterno is alot like Bowden wanting to coach until he can no longer do it but the writing is on the wall. I think it's time to hand over the reigns to either a long time assistant (Tom Bradley) or possibly Rutgers head man, Greg Schiano. Now, all you Nittany Lion yahoos relax. Penn St. will most likely win 9 or 10 games (because the Big-10 is so mediocre this season) and go to either a BCS or mid level bowl, but don't expect them to win a bigtime bowl game anytime soon. Does anyone remember last years Rose Bowl ? How they continue to get Top 15 recruiting classes boggles my mind..they must have some amazing co-eds at Penn St....they don't call it "Happy Valley" for nothing !

What's with this Dez Bryant situation ? Time for the NCAA to just relax and get a clue ! Now, if the kid was sitting with Deion Sanders and an agent, collecting greenbacks and cell phones and a Rolls...fine, suspend him. But because he is friends with an EX-pro football player and didn't tell the truth about his relationship with Sanders to NCAA investigators that they hung out and talked ? C'mon, the kid isn't cheating in class, hasn't committed any major crime, hasn't robbed a store or even signed with an agent ! He is a kid and was scared about losing his eligibility status for his junior season and possibly his career. Get over it and let him play !

OTHER NEWS

The Miami Hurricanes have lost their top tackler in linebacker Jordan Futch to a knee injury. From all reports it looks like the freshman linebacker will be lost for the remainder of the year.

Michigan quarterback Tate "The Great" Forcier suffered a slight concussion during the Iowa game but has been cleared to play this Saturday in the Wolverines non conference matchup with Deleware St.

It sure looks more and more like Florida, Alabama and Texas have distanced themselves from the pack and it's a three team race for the National Championship. Of course, the Tide will lose to South Carolina, Texas to Oklahoma and the Gators will be upset Georgia....lets hope not ! Lets break down those top 3 teams:

My number one is ALABAMA. The Tide have a suffocating defense that can stuff the run, rush the passer and cover man to man. They have forced some good quarterbacks (hello Jevan Snead and Tyrod Taylor) into multiple mistakes while their offense can run the ball down anyones throat. First year starting quarterback Greg McElroy has played mistake free football and is looking like a seasoned pro with each passing game.

My number two is FLORIDA. The Gators have Tim Tebow and that is a pretty good start ! Although the Gaors can run the ball (averaging a ridiculous 7.8 ypg), they will not be able to do that against the Tide (if it comes to that). Tebow is excellent at the read option and knows when to cut it up inside or make that last second pitch to their speedsters. The Florida defense is ranked second behind the Tide in the SEC and playmakers like Brandon Spikes and cornerback Joe Haden have All-American written all over them.

My number three is TEXAS. The best defense in the Big-12. They all can run and can gang tackle with the best of em'. Watch DE Sergio Kindle...a real stud. On offense, Colt McCoy has struggled some in the first half of a few games but has made the plays when needed. His favorite target, his roomate Jordan Shipley (8 TD's). The Horns' defense will keep them in every game, even with the inconsistent offense, but once they have to play a Florida or Alabama, they lack the running game to beat either of those two teams.

Jacquizz Rodgers Running Back Oregon St.
THE LINE: Rodgers broke out in a big way leading the Beavers over the Stanford Cardinal 38-28. "The Quizz" outshined Heisman hopefull, Toby Gerhart by rushing for a season high 189 yards on 33 carries and 4 TD's.

Freddie Barnes Wide Receiver Bowling Green
THE LINE: The Falcons receiver tied an NCAA record by catching 23 passes for 278 yards and added 3 TD's in a come from behind victory over Kent St.

Thaddeus Lewis          Quarberback          Duke
THE LINE:     Lewis completed an unbelievable 40 out of 50 passes for a career high 459 yards and 5 TD's in the Blue Devils 49-28 romp over N.C. State. Besides throwing for the 5 TD's, he also ran for another TD.

THE LINE:     The 6'-4" 305 pound wrecking ball totalled 6 tackles, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble and an interception in the Huskers 27-12 win over Mizzou. Each week, Suh shows why he is the best interior lineman in the country.

Brandon Spikes          Middle Linebacker          Florida
THE LINE:     The All-American helped the Gators dominate L.S.U. with a game high 11 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble keeping Florida undefeated and protecting their number one ranking.

Mark Ingram          Running Back          Alabama
The sophomore sensation ran through the Mississippi defense for 172 yards and a touchdown in helping the Tide roll, 22-3 over the Rebels.

Overall, not a bad week going 10-4 against the spread. I did win my "Lock of the Week" and my "Upset of the Week" games, but faltered in my "Marquise Matchup of the Week".

Let's wrap it up:
THE LINE:     Va. Tech by 13    (LOSS)
The VIRGINIA TECH defense held visiting BOSTON COLLEGE to three first half yards and Tyrod Taylor threw for a pair of touchdowns leading the Hokies to a 48-14 demolition of B.C.   Va. Tech freshman running back Ryan Williams continued his excellent rookie season piling up 159 yards (1 TD). Eagles starting quarterback Dan Shinskie went an abysmal 1-12 for FOUR yards and 2 INT's.

THE LINE:     AUBURN by 2 1/2 (WON)
ARKANSAS jumped out to an early 27-3 lead and coasted to a 44-23 victory over SEC rival AUBURN. The Hogs accumulated 28 first downs and running back Michael Smith ran for 145 yards (1 TD) while the Arkansas defense limited Auburn to 375 yards (their worst out put of the year).

THE LINE:     FLORIDA ST. by 3 (LOSS)
GEORGIA TECH ran up 401 yards on the ground in scoring the most points against a Bobb Bowden coached team in Tallahassee, winning 49-44. Yellowjackets quarterback Josh Nesbitt accounted for 140 yards and 3 TD's while running back Jonathan Dwyer picked up 102 yards and pair of scores. FLORIDA ST. quarterback Christian Ponder was superb in defeat completing 26-36 for 359 yards and 5 TD's.

THE LINE:     TENNESSEE by 1   (LOSS)
Maligned TENNESSEE quarterback Jonathan Crompton threw for a career high 310 yards and 4 TD's (1 INT) leading coach Lane Kiffin and the Vols to their first SEC win of the year, a 45-19 drubbing of falling by the wayside GEORGIA. Bulldog quarterback Joe Cox continues to struggle filling in for the departed Matthew Stafford.

THE LINE:     IOWA by 8   (WON)
IOWA quarterback Ricky Stanzi threw for 248 yards and 2 TD's and the Hawkeye defense intercepted MICHIGAN backup QB Dennard Robinson on the Wolverines final drive to secure a hard fought 30-28 victory in Iowa City. Michigan starting QB Tate "The Great" Forcier was ineffective throughout the game throwing for 94 yards with 1 interception before being replaced in the 4th quarter by Robinson. Iowa is off to their best start since going 9-0 in 1985.

THE LINE:     OHIO ST. by 16   (WON)
WISCONSIN outgained the Buckeyes by 184 total yards but could not escape the constant miscues in a 31-13 loss to OHIO ST. The Badgers held a 22-8 advantage in first downs and held the Buckeyes to 184 yards but the Ohio St. defense returned two interceptions for touchdowns and Ray Small ran back a kickoff 96 yards for the win. Ohio St. quarterback Terrelle Pryor was ineffective the entire game completing just five passes (1 TD, 1 INT). He has not improved his play as most thought he would during his sophomore year.

THE LINE:     ALABAMA by 6   (WON)
The ALABAMA defense picked off four Jevan Snead passes and completely dominated the game defensively leading the Tide to an easy 22-3 win over MISSISSIPPI. Tide running back Mark Ingram rushed for 172 yards and 1 TD and quarterback Greg McElroy played error free football once again.

THE LINE:     T.C.U. by 9   (WON)
In terrible weather conditions, the T.C.U. Horned Frogs remained unbeaten, slipping and sliding past the AIR FORCE Falcons 20-17. With wind chills in the low 20's and freezing sleet and snowflurries slowing down both offenses T.C.U. quarterback Andy Dalton did enough to help secure the win. The Horned Frogs committed three costly turnovers that kept Air Force in the game.

THE LINE:     FLORIDA by 7 1/2   (LOSS)
Tim Tebow did get the start and the top ranked Gators of FLORIDA stayed unbeaten, outslugging L.S.U. 13-3. Tebow wasn't great and he didn't have to be.   The Gators defense pretty much controlled the game harassing Tigers quarterback Jordan Jefferson all evening, sacking him 5 times including 2 1/2 by All-American linebacker Brandon Spikes (game high 11 tackles).

THE LINE:     NEBRASKA by 3   (WON)
Huskers quarterback Zac Lee had his troubles through three quarters but hit on two TD passes in the fourth leading NEBRASKA back from a 12-0 deficit, beating MISSOURI 27-12 on Thursday night. In a driving rain storm, both teams struggled with many penalties and dropped balls all evening. The Nebraska offense only generated 59 yards unitl 12:42 remaining in the fourth quarter. Tiger quarterback Blaine Gabbert was sacked in the first quarter by Nebraska DT, Ndamukong Suh and was ineffective for the remainder of the game. Suh dominated the Missouri offensive line finising with 8 tackles, 2 sacks and a fumble recovery.

THE LINE:     STANFORD by 1 1/2   (WON)
OREGON ST. running back Jacquizz Rodgers ran for a career high 189 yards and 4 TD's as the Beavers knocked off Pac-10 leader STANFORD, 38-28 in Corvallis. The Beavers defense held Stanford Heisman hopefull, running back Toby Gerhart for under 100 yards (94 yards) for the first time this season.

THE LINE:     MICHIGAN ST. by 4 1/2   (WON)
Making his first collegiate start, Spartan quarterback Keith Nichol threw for 179 yards and running back Larry Capers ran for 95 yards and a TD to lead MICHIGAN ST. to a 24-14 over the slumping Illini of ILLINOIS. The Illini have now dropped four in a row and the boos could be heard loud and clear throughout Champaign Urbana directed at coach Ron Zook.

THE LINE:     UTAH by 7 1/2   (WON)
Quarterback Terrance Cain threw for a pair of touchdowns leading UTAH to a 24-17 victory over an improving COLORADO ST. team. The game was played in 25 degree temperatures as the Utes try to battle their way back to another Mountain West championship.

THE LINE:     ARIZONA by 3   (WON)
In what is being dubbed as the "Immaculate Interception", Husky linebacker Mason Foster intercepted a Nick Foles pass and returned it 37 yards for the game winning touchdown with 2:37 remaining to give WASHINGTON an improbable come back victory, 36-33 over ARIZONA in Seattle. At the 6:38 mark of the 4th quarter, Washington trailed Arizona 33-21 before launching their comeback. Husky quarterback Jake Locker ran for 101 yards and a touchdown and also threw 3 TD's in the win. The "play" happened as the Wildcats were attempting to run out the clock, a pass from Foles to Delashaun Dean deflected off Dean's shoe tip and into the hands of Foster who took off for the clincher.

"RUDY" Gimme a break. A real "tear jerker". I think the actor that played the real Rudy (Sean Astin) was actually taller and had more athletic ability ! And in REAL LIFE, he never sacked any Georgia Tech quarterback !

Week 6 Picks and Predictions (October 10, 2009)

*The Hokies didn't impress in last weeks win over Duke. Although at home, I don't think they will get fired up for this game against B.C.   I like what 25 year old freshman quarterback David Shinske is doing after replacing Justin Tuggle. The Eagles won't win but take B.C. and the 13 points.
PREDICTION:     Virginia Tech 27-Boston College 17

At OHIO STATE...........................16........................WISCONSIN
*The Badgers come in undefeated and leave Columbus with their first loss. The Buckeye defense will shut down RB John Clay and Pryor will light up the Wisconsin secondary. Buckeyes big !
PREDICTION:     Ohio St. 31-Wisconsin 14

MICHIGAN STATE...................4 1/2......................at ILLINOIS
*This is "Sparty Girls" pick (a Michigan St. alumn). Illinois has benched senior captain Juice Williams and will start Eddie McGhee. The Spartans are coming off an emotional OT win against Michigan. This one is going to be close, but "Sparty Girl" likes her green and white:

At FLORIDA ST...........................3........................,,,GEORGIA TECH
*How the Seminoles are favored in this one is beyond me. Somebody must know something about this one. If the Noles' drop their third in a row, Jimbo Fisher might be sent into exile ! Tech is coming off a huge win, look for a letdown:

At TENNESSEE.............................1.............................GEORGIA
*With Vols QB Jonathan Crompton calling signals, that should in itself be enough to guarantee a Georgia victory. This is a do or die game for the Bulldogs and the Cox to Green combination will be the difference.

UTAH.........................................7 1/2......................at COLORADO ST.
*This is definately an upset pick. The Utes take the field for the first time since losing to Oregon. I think they will overlook Colorado St.   Rams Coach Steve Fairchild is doing an excellent job rebuilding the Rams program.   Utah will win but not by 7 1/2 points.
PREDICTION:     Utah 33-Colorado St. 27

AUBURN.......................................2 1/2.........................at ARKANSAS
*Almost my upset special of the week. Auburn rides into Razorback country undefeated with a potent offense. They run into a more potent offense on this night.  Hog QB Ryan Mallett can sling it like no other SEC quarterback. I like Arkansas to win this one outright. Even though Auburn coach Chizik and Razorback coach Petrino coached together way back...I like Petrino in this matchup.
PREDICTION:     Arkansas 41-Auburn 38

At IOWA....................................8.................................MICHIGAN
*Iowa looked great defeating Penn St. but will not be able to stop the Wolverine offense. Not sure if Forcier is 100%. If he is, Michigan rolls. Iowa is one dimentional. QB Ricky Stansi does not scare anyone with his arm. I like coach "In Rod We Trust !
PREDICTION:     Michigan 31-Iowa 20

T.C.U.......................................9...................................at AIR FORCE
*This is going to be a very physical game. Smash mouth football at its finist. The Horned Frogs will win the game but not by 9. I like the Falcons to keep this one close the entire game. The option attack is difficult to defend with just one week of preparation.

**UPSET ALERT**

*My "Upset Special" of the week. Cardinal RB Toby Gerhart has had his way so far this season. He'll be needing a bottle of Tylenol after the Beavers get through with him. Remember....always pick a Beaver over a Tree !

ALABAMA............................6.................................at MISSISSIPPI

*Mississippi will play inspired ball. The crowd will be all rev'd up ! But shear talent wins out. Saban will not let the Tide slide. In the end, the Alabama running game and defense will win it.

ARIZONA...............................3..................................at WASHINGTON

*Very difficult game for my Huskies against a defensive minded Arizona team. Husky QB Jaker Locker has played better and better each week and WR James Johnson has been the go to target. In the end, I like coach Sarkisian better than coach Stoops.

PREDICTION: Washington 23-Arizona 20

WEST VIRGINIA......................10................................at SYRACUSE

*Orange QB Paulus must be better this week or the Cuse' will get run out of the Carrier Dome ! I don't see how Syracuse will be able to handle the speed of the West Virginia offense, especially Noel Devine.

PREDICTION: West Virginia 35-Syracuse 17

MARQUIS MATCHUP OF THE WEEK

FLORIDA................................7 1/2......................................at L.S.U.

*I wish I knew if Tebow was a go. As of this writing he is about 40/60. I personally don't think he'll play. He may suit up and be a sideline warrior. What can I say, the Bayou Bengals to knock off the defending SEC and BCS champs ! Believe in "The Hat" ! This should be somewhat of a defensive struggle. If John Brantley is the Gator QB, he can throw (better than Tebow) but cannot run the read option nearly as well. That takes away a HUGE threat. Tigers defensive coordinator John Chavous has not opened up his defensive playbook all the way yet. Maybe he was awaiting this game. I think he throws everything at the Gators offense and forces Brantley (or Tebow) to beat em'. I think the special teams will be key here, Trindon Holliday has the ability to take it the distance anytime he gets his hands on the ball (just ask Georgia). Jordan Jefferson will have to play the best game of his life, I believe he will. Baton Rouge will be ROCKING !

Thursday Night Special (October 8, 2009)

LOCK OF THE WEEK

NEBRASKA............................3..................................at MISSOURI

The 21st ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers visit Columbia, MO and the 24th ranked Missouri Tigers on Thursday night (9:00 p.m. ESPN). This is the first Big-12 conference game for each team. Lets take a look at the visitors from Lincoln, NE.

The Cornhuskers come in with a record of 4-1, with their lone defeat at the hands of Virginia Tech 16-15 in a game they controlled throughout only to lose in the waning seconds. I believe in team matchups and in this game, I like the matchups to favor Nebraska. The Missouri defense is not known as a pressure defense and I believe quarterback Zac Lee will complete his share of passes. The big advantage for the Huskers' is their offense and defensive lines. On offense look for runnning back Roy Helu Jr.(464 yards, 6.4 avg., 5 TD's) to run both inside and outside. The Huskers come in averaging 440 yards per game and are ninth in scoring with 39.3 points per game. The only time Nebraska has been slowed was by Virginia Tech, and even in that game the Huskers outgained the Hokies by a large margin. Look for Bo Pelini to let his front seven loose on Tigers quarterback Blaine Gabbert. So far this season Gabbert has not thrown an interception. That perfect mark will not stand when this game is finished.

For Missouri (4-0), they really haven't been tested, especially against a very physical defense like the "Blackshirts". The above mentioned Gabbert has gotten off to a sensational start (1,161 yards and 11 TD's with 0 INT's). Missouri does have other offensive options besides Gabbert. Junior tailback Derrick Washington leads the team in rushing with 301 yards and 2 TD's. He can also catch the ball out of the backfield (24 receptions last season). On defense All-Big 12 returning linebacker Sean Weatherspoon has to step up and make "sure" tackles as the Husker backs are excellent at gaining yards after initial contact.

KEYS:
Missouri O-Line VS. Nebraska D-Line: Whoever controls the line of scrimmage will win this game. I like the Huskers D-Line to stuff the run and pressure Blaine Gabbert into multiple turnovers.

PREDICTION: Nebraska 34-Missouri 17

This Weeks News and Notes

All signs point to this season being the last for long time Florida St. Head Coach Bobby Bowden. Bowden has been synonimus with success since taking over the reins as coach back in 1976, but the program has slipped in the last ten years and this seasons 0-2 ACC record has Seminole fans jumping off the once crowded bandwagon.

Take this comment from the chairman of the Florida St. Board of Trustees Jim Smith. "My hope is frankly that we’ll go ahead, and if we have to, let the world know that this year will be the end of the Bowden Era,” said Smith, a 1962 FSU alum and a former Florida secretary of state and state attorney general. “… We are dependent on the goodwill and the financial resources of thousands of people to make this program work effectively. And we don’t have any goodwill out there right now. … People have had it.” If the above statement is true it looks like Jimbo Fisher will take command in 2010.

Still no word on whether Florida quarterback Tim Tebow will start or even play in this Saturdays huge matchup in Baton Rouge between the number one Gators and fourth ranked Tigers of L.S.U.   If Tebow does not go, look for sophomore John Brantley to lead Florida making his first career start.   Although he is no Tim Tebow, he does have a better arm than the former Heisman winner. It looks like this will be a game time decision, but knowing the heart of Tebow it would not shock me to see him behind center come 8:00 p.m. EST.

Did anyone notice Boise St. dropped a spot to number six in the rankings this week ?   Unfortunately, the Broncos just don't have anyone left on the schedule to build a descent resume with.   Their only hope is to have Oregon win out (which would make that opening day victory over the Ducks very impressive).  If Boise St. finishes undefeated (and they will be favored in their remaining games) they should at least garner a BCS game. Remember, they pulled off the huge upset in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl over a favored Oklahoma team.

What in the world has happened to the California Golden Bears ?  They have played the last two weeks like they are in hibernation !   Jahvid Best went from a Heisman front runner to not even the best back in the Pac-10.   Shoddy quarterback play by Kevin Riley has cost the Bears dearly.   Once defenses started loading up the box with eight players stuffing the running game, it was up to Riley to throw and soften up the line to better help Best get started.   He has totally flopped and has been no threat whatsoever.   Cal has a backup quarterback Beau Sweeney (who's father Kevin, starred at Fresno St. and played for the Dallas Cowboys and grandfather Jim Sweeney was a legendary coach of the Bulldogs) and I believe if Riley's struggles continue this week, will get a legitimate shot as the starter. The Pac-10 race is wide open but I still think the Trojans will stumble one or two more times.   A non-conference matchup with Notre Dame in two weeks and a trip to Eugene, OR and the vastly improved Oregon Ducks loom.

Syracuse quarterback Greg Paulus lost his starting point guard job at Duke his senior season and if he continues to perform like last Saturday (5 INT's) he won't be playing much more for the Orange this season. It was a nice story, out of football for four years and coming back home to Syracuse, where he starred as a prep football/basketball player at Brothers Christian High School but he is really not a starting quarterback in major college football.   That being said, the Orange are so weak at that position he may be their only option.

Intriguing matchup this week between Alabama and Mississippi. The question is, which Mississippi team will show up ?   So far, Jevan Snead has played very inconsistently throwing for almost as many interceptions (5) as touchdowns (7). If I had a vote in the BCS standings, I would vote Alabama number one.   I think they have the nations best and most complete defense (run and pass) solid special teams and their offense will only improve as first year starter Greg McElroy gets more comfortable each and every week. The Tide may have lost some starters along the offensive line but Head Coach Nick Saban is a master at building excellent depth and talent in the trenches. Will the Rebels play like the team that upset Florida in the swamp last year OR the team that has shown very little this season ? All inclinations point to an easy Bama' victory but I'll re-visit this game in depth on Thursday night.

Interesting to see how Tate "The Great" Forcier (my compliments to Wayne the Wolverine) responds to his first adversity of the season. Although he played a very good second half (particularly the fourth quarter) he did force his pass in overtime resulting in a Michigan St. interception. I believe the kid has the makings of a star. He may never be an N.F.L. quarterback or first round pick, but he will be a very good college quarterback, capable of leading the once proud Wolverines back to the national spotlight.

Can anyone figure out this 2009 College Football season ?   I admit, after this weekend, I am having my difficulites !

USC goes into Berkley and lays it on the Cal. Bears 30-3.   The Trojans totally dominated the game from start to finish and held Jahvid Best to under 50 yards. Trojan QB Matt Barkley remains undefeated as the starter.

Running Back Larry Caper ran 23 yards for the game winning touchdown in overtime, leading MICHIGAN ST. over in-state rival Michigan 26-20. The Spartans have now beaten the Woverines in back to back games for the first time in 42 years.

Quarterback Greg McElroy threw a pair of TD passes and running back Mark Ingram rushed for 140 yards and 2 TD's to lead ALABAMA to an pedestrian 38-20 victory over Kentucky.   The Tide are rolling and look to be the most complete team in college football.

Running back Montel Harris rushed for 175 yards and 2 TD's in leading the Eagles of BOSTON COLLEGE to a 28-20 upset over the slumping Seminoles of Florida St. I hear rumblings in Tallahassee...is it time for legendary coach Bobby Bowden to step down ?

MISSISSIPPI survived three interceptions by QB Jevan Snead to defeat Vanderbilt 23-7. Snead did redeem himself by throwing three TD's but is not looking like the Heisman hopefull the Oxford faithful would have thought.

Charles Scott's 33 yard TD run with 46 seconds remaining gave L.S.U. a hard fought come from behind win over the Bulldogs of Georgia. Georgia had scored the go ahead touchdown only minutes earlier on a Joe Cox to A.J. Green connection. An excessive TD celebration penalty put the Tigers in excellent field position to begin the game winning drive. Up next week for L.S.U., a home clash with #1 ranked Florida.

PENN ST. rolled up 338 rushing yards in easily defeating Illinois.   Illini coach John Zook is on the hotseat and is in danger of losing his team.   They are just playing very poorly, especially for a team that was thought to challenge for a Big-10 title.

How does this happen ?   I need someone out there to explain this to me !   UTEP (which stands for University of Texas-El Paso) scores 58 points in upsetting previously undefeated Houston 58-41 !   Last week, the Miners of UTEP finished the Texas game with a total of FIFTY FOUR YARDS the entire game..and they score FIFTY EIGHT POINTS the next week ? This loss completely knocks Houston out of any hope of a BCS berth. Cougar QB Case Keenum attempted 71 passes !   OUCH !

My "Luxury Box Lock Of The Week" was successful as MIAMI QB Jacory Harris overcame two early interceptions by throwing for three TD's and running back Javaris James rushed for 150 yards leading the Canes' to a 21-20 victory over 8th ranked Oklahoma. Give Harris time and he will pick you apart. The Sooners have a date with Texas looming.

The NOTRE DAME defense stuffed Washington on 6 tries inside the 1 yard line, only giving up a field goal in defeating the Huskies in overtime, 37-30.   Jimmy Clausen again threw for over 400 yards and a pair of TD's. Receiver Golden Tate was "golden" hauling in 9 catches for 244 yards and a touchdown. There were some very questionable calls in this game. If your a Golden Domer, you smile...if you're a Husky fan or Notre Dame hater, you're seething !

BOISE ST. won't pick up any style points but did take care of business beating UC-Davis 34-16. Broncos QB Kellen Moore threw for two touchdowns as Boise St. looks to stay in the top 5 with this less than impressive effort. Unfortunately, Boise plays their remaining schedule against no ranked teams which will probably hurt their chances at a potential BCS Championship game.   With Houston losing, it's just Boise St. and T.C.U. for the Non-BCS possibilities.

T.C.U. played a sloppy first half but exploded for 27 second half points in downing S.M.U. 39-14.   The Horned Frog defense held S.M.U. to minus 15 yards rushing while the T.C.U. offense produced 229 rushing. QB Andy Dalton threw for 189 yards and two touchdowns. The only true roadblocks remaining on the T.C.U. schedule look like Utah and B.Y.U.   I think the Cougars will derail the Horned Frogs in a couple of weeks.

If there a quarterback anywhere in the country worse than Tennessee starter Jonathan Crompton ?   Please tell me, anyone ?   The answer, NO !   He is the worst scholarship player I've ever seen. He simply cannot complete a pass when it matters, or when it doesn't matter. It looks like AUBURN and first year coach Gene Chizik are for real as the Tigers hung on to defeat Rocky Top, 26-22. The Tigers racked up 459 yards of total offense against a very good Tennessee defense. The surprising thing, the Auburn defense stepping up and making plays, be it against Jonathan Crompton !

The Big East is shaping up as a two team race...CINCINNATI continues to impress as Bearcats quarterback Tony Pike threw for a pair of scores leading Cincinnati to a 37-13 win in a blustry day in Oxford, OH. A big Thursday night game against South Florida awaits !

Speaking of the above mentioned Bulls of SOUTH FLORIDA, quarterback B.J. Daniels trew for 208 yards, including an 85 yard TD pass to Carlton Mitchell and the Bulls defense forced 7 Syracuse turnovers as South Florida escaped Orange country 34-20.   Five of the Syracuse turnovers were Greg Paulus interceptions.   I'm sure it's days like this that make Paulus yearn for the hardwood !

We're going to do something a little different. Cooler 666 suggested that instead of analyzing every game in depth, I should pick games against the spread with a very brief synopsis. I will leave my "Luxury Box Lock Of The Week" for the in depth analysis.

I believe Head Coach Nick Saban has the Tide playing the best football in the country. They have been battle tested and gotten better each week. This should not be close.

Clausen is still not 100%. It won't matter, too much of a running game for Notre Dame (Washington's achilles heel). If Armando Allen is healthy, he should have a HUGE day.

PENN ST.........................7.........................at ILLINOIS
I like the Illini at home. Penn St. flopped on the sloppy turf last week against Iowa. Illinois does have some talent and they shine this week.

After what I saw out of Indiana last week, I don't think they win but they can cover the 17 points.   The Ohio St. defense is a lot tougher than Michigans but at home, Indiana will play inspired ball.

At Georgia..................3............................L.S.U.
I've gone back and forth on this one. Even though I love the Tigers, they haven't played a full 4 quarters yet this season and until play like the 4th ranked team in the nation, I can't believe it. So far the Tigers have not showed that great defense and Georgia can move the ball on the ground or through the air.
PREDICTION:     Georgia 31-L.S.U. 20

At TENNESSEE...............1 1/2..................AUBURN
What gives ? The offense of Auburn or the defense of Tennessee. I'll go the Monte Kiffin's unit and the Vols at home. A close one but in the end, the running game of Tennessee will get it done.

At ARIZONA ST...................4 1/2................OREGON ST.
Sun Devils coming off heart breaking loss at Georgia. Oregon St. has not played it's best ball yet this season. Look for the Rodgers brothers to finally break out this week. That being said, Arizona St. has the best defensive freshman in the country in linebacker Vontaze Burfict.
PREDICTION:     Oregon St. 24-Arizona St. 23

USC....................................5........................at CALIFORNIA
I not only think Cal will cover the points, but they will win this outright. The Bears were embarrased last week in Eugene and Jahvid Best was shut down. Not two weeks in a row. The Trojans looked lethargic and unimpressive in their in over Washington St. Shout out to USC tailback Stafon Johnson, get well soon !

At MICHIGAN ST.............2.........................MICHIGAN
I know, the Wolverines come into East Lansing undefeated and Sparty has lost 3 in a row. Even in their losses, Michigan St. has showed an explosive offense. Silly undiciplined play has cost them at least 2 games. The Wolverines can move the ball with Forcier and Co. but a poor defensive effort will make Sparty smile.
PREDICTION:     Michigan St. 38-Michigan 30

GEORGIA TECH................6.......................at MISSISSIPPI ST.
Interesting game. Mississippi St. showed a lot in their loss to L.S.U. last week. I think they will have a major letdown after "almost" upsetting the Tigers. Tech is coming off a sold performance and finally has the triple option and Jonathan Dwyer rolling. The Yellowjackets should easily cover the points here.
PREDICDTION:     Georgia Tech 43-Mississippi St. 28

SOUTH FLORIDA...............6......................at SYRACUSE
On paper this looks like a total mismatch. A one win Syracuse team should get trounced by the Bulls, especially after the performance S. Florida put on at Florida St. last week. Another major letdown, I see the Bulls winning but not covering the spread. QB Greg Paulus will keep it close, good luck "Orange Girl" !

At STANFORD..................5.......................U.C.L.A.
I believe in Neuheisel's team.   The Bruins will be tested by Stanford. As good as Cardinal running back Toby Gerhart is, he won't run wild against this Bruins defense. A close one, but the boys from Westwood win it outright.

MISSISSIPPI.....................8....................at VANDERBILT
If Rebels coach Houston Nutt can't get his bunch going against Vanderbilt, the once promising season is going down the drain. QB Jevan Snead HAS TO BE BETTER this time around. I believe he is and Mississippi will roll.

LUXURY BOX LOCK OF THE WEEK

OKLAHOMA....................7....................at MIAMI, FL

Sooners QB Landry Jones gets another start as Bradford sits one more week. Note to Jones, this isn't Idaho St. or Tulsa ! Jacory Harris had a miserable day in Blacksburg as did the whole Hurricanes' squad, from offense to defense to special teams. I believe they get it right this time around and win it outright. Miami will have to do a much better job of protecting Harris in the pocket. If they can give Harris time, he will pick apart the Sooners inexperienced secondary. Oklahoma will try to run the ball to keep pressure off Jones and time of possesion will be key in this game. In the end, a fired up Canes' defense forces Jones into a fumble and a couple of interceptions and pins the Sooners with their second loss of the season.

PREDICTION: Miami, Fl. 27-Oklahoma 14

Week 4 Playmakers

1. Jeremiah Masoli Quarberback Oregon
*All I can say is "It's about time" ! I had Masoli on my Heisman list at the beginning of the year and so far this duck has laid an egg ! Masoli played like a Heisman candidate in leading the Quack Attack to a 42-3 trouncing over PAC-10 rival California. After not passing for close to 200 yards so far this season, Masoli was near flawless completing 21 of 25 for 253 yards and 3 TD's.

2. A.J. Green Wide Receiver Georgia
*Green caught 8 passes for 153 and 1 TD in a come from behind Georgia victory. When not making amazing catches, Green found time enough to block a critical FG in the second half. This will most likely be his last year on campus. The N.F.L. is waiting.

3. Marty Gilyard Wide Receiver Cincinnati
*All Gilyard did was catch 9 passes for 177 yards and a pair of TD's, including a 55 yard bomb from Tony Pike. The Pike to Gilyard connection is fast becoming one of college footballs best pass and catch combos and certainly the best the Big East has to offer.

HONORABLE MENTION

Austyn Carter-Samuels Quarterback Wyoming

*First start for the true freshman, 24 of 37 362 yards and 3 TD's (0 INT)

Darius Willis Running Back Indiana

*In a close 36-33 loss, Willis almost single handedly beat the Michigan Wolverines toting the rock 16 times for 152 yards including an 85 yard TD scamper.

Week 4 Wrap Up

Attempting to predict college football games is becoming an increasingly difficult job ! There have been so many upsets with highly ranked teams going down to unranked teams. It really just shows the parity there is in college football. Oh, you'll still have your Gators and Longhorns, but they are not imune to the upset.

Things started off on Thursday night and of course a South Carolina defense that has given up huge chunks of yardage so far this season clamps down on Mississippi QB Jevan Snead. Mississippi played poorly and could not execute (going 1-13 on third down conversions). On the flipside, Gamecocks QB Stephen Garcia hit on some timely throws and the Reblels poor use of clock management (we'll address this later) ended their run in the Top 5:
FINAL:     South Carolina 16-Mississippi 10

Texas routed the Miners of UTEP. Not much in this game other than Colt McCoy did throw another interception (returned for a TD). He better start ratcheting up his game as the competition increases in the Big-12:
FINAL:     Texas 64-UTEP 7

In one of the most impressive weekend performances, Alabama dominated Arkansas from the start. The Tide defense held QB Ryan Mallett to only 160 yards with just 1 TD and intercepted him once. This is the same QB that torched Georgia last week for 5 TD's ! Tide QB Greg McElroy lit up the Razorback secondary completing 17-24 for 291 yards and 3 TD's. Freshman running back Terry Richardson continues to work well with starting tailback Mark Ingram to provide a solid 1-2 punch. All signs point to another Alabama-Florida SEC showdown:
FINAL:     Alabama 35-Arkansas 7

Oregon QB Jermiah Masoli answered all his critics (namely ME) by throwing for 253 yards and 3 TD's leading the Ducks to a lopsided rout over the favored Cal Bears. Heisman hopefull Jahvid Best was held in check most of the day finishing with just 55 yards (84 below his average). The real star of the game was Masoli who finally played like his pre-season Heisman hype. Looks like the PAC-10 is wide open again:
FINAL:    Oregon 42-California 3

Cincinnati rode the arm of Tony Pike (300 yards, 3 TD's) and the hands of Marty Gilyard (9 catches, 177 yards and 2 TD's) to hold off Fresno St.   Cincinnati improves to 4-0 and could be knocking on the door for a shot at the Top 10. Bulldog tailback Ryan Mathews did run for 134 yards in a losing effort:
FINAL:     Cincinnati 28-Fresno St. 20

Andy Dalton's 25 TD pass to Antoine Hicks was the difference as T.C.U. remained undefeated in taking down Clemson 14-10. The Tigers had a couple of chances to pull this game out late but a missed FG and 4 chances from inside the T.C.U. 20 with less than a minute to go failed to materialize. Another huge win for a non-BCS conference team:
FINAL:     T.C.U.-14-Clemson 10

An amazing goal line stand by the L.S.U. Tigers defense in the final minutes of the game help preserve a hard fought 30-26 win over the Bulldogs of Mississippi St. Miss. St. had 4 chances to punch it in from the 1 yard line and could not do it. Tigers QB Jordan Jerfferson had a fine game with 233 yards and 2 TD's. New Bulldog coach Dan Mullen has his team playing much better football and they nearly shocked the Tigers on this Saturday afternoon. L.S.U. hosts Florida in 2 weeks !:
FINAL:     L.S.U. 30-Mississippi St. 26

Who would have figured that after trashing B.Y.U. last week AND with South Floridas starting QB and all everything QB Matt Grothe out for the year, that the Bulls would pull off a stunner in Doak Campbell Stadium ? I had never heard of B.J. Daniels before yesterday, I sure know him now, as do the Florida St. players and coaches. When the quarterback wasn't running around Seminole defenders (126 yards), he was throwing deep on them (73 yard TD). The real surprise was the South Florida defense holding Florida St. to 7 points. Statistic wise, Noles' QB Christian Ponder had a good game (25-37 and 239 yards) but was sacked 8 times. A huge win for the S. Florida program and should help their instate recruiting battles with the Big 3 (Florida, Florida St. and Miami, FL.):

Even though Michigan won this game, it was closer than many predicted (including me). Give it up to Indiana..they came into the game undefeated and almost left that way ! Tate Forcier pulled off his normal late game heroics hitting Martavious Odoms for a 36 yard TD with 2:29 remaining and the Michigan defense intercepted an Indiana pass with 42 seconds remaining. The Wolverines have some difficult games on the horizon with back to back away games against Michigan St. and Iowa. Defensive Coordinator Greg Robinson better find out how to stop the run as Michigan gave up 197 yards on the ground:

Why did I pick Penn St. to beat Iowa ??? I mean last year, the Hawkeyes knock off State on the last play of the game to kill their BCS hopes. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz has won 6 out of 7 against Joe Pa.   All signs pointed to the Nittany Lions extracting some revenge and winning this game. I learned something, never bet against Kirk Ferentz when they play Penn St. !   The Hawkeyes parlayed an Adrian Clayborn blocked punt (returned 53 yards for a TD) and intercepted Penn St. QB Darryll Clark 3 times in route to the surprising victory. Penn St. will most likely drop out of the Top 10 while the Hawkeyes should make an appearance in the Top 25:

At least I had this one right. Stanford RB Toby Gerhart ran around, over and through the Washington Husky defense for a career high 200 yards (including a 60 yard TD) as Stanford brought my Huskies back down to earth blowing them out 34-14. The Cardinal offense piled up 424 yards in knocking the Huskies out of the Top 25. A week after pulling off one of the biggest upsets in college football history, Washington must regroup and not get too down. For Stanford, they are much improved and coach Jim Harbaugh has done a marvelous job with the program:

Florida had no trouble with SEC foe Kentucky but did lose QB Tim Tebow to a concussion early in the 3rd quarter. Tebow got hammered by DE Taylor Wyndham and also slammed his helmet into one of his own players knees on his way to down to the turf. He lay motionless for several minutes and was eventually carted off the field and taken by ambulance to Lexington Memorial Hospital where he spent the night. Backup QB John Brantley (who knew they had another QB ??) filled in and did throw for a TD pass late in the game. The Gators do have their bye week which couldn't have come at a better time. Besides losing Tebow, many players on the Florida squad have been suffering from flu like and respiratory illnes and have had to be quarrantined and even flying seperate flights so their teamates would not catch the illness. I hope Tebow gets well quick because they have a date in Death Valley and the L.S.U. Tigers in 2 weeks:

Wolfpack QB Russell Wilson threw for 4 TD's in leading N.C. State to a come from behind victory of the previously undefeated Pitt Panthers. Pittsburgh jumped out to a quick lead led by the running of true freshman Dion Lewis but could really not generate much offense on this day. The Panthers only had 11 first downs compared to N.C. State's 27:

Miami, FL QB Jacory Harris has been living the high life lately and his Canes' offense has been putting up yards and points like a video game. It all came crashing down yesterday in Blacksburg as the Virginia Tech defense pressured the sophomore QB all day long causing a key fumble that help set up a Hokie TD and the always reliable special teams scored off a blocked punt leading the Hokies to a surprisingly easy victory in a rain soaked Lane Stadium. Tech has only lost once (to Alabama) and looks like a Top 10 team with back to back victories at home over Nebraska and now Miami. They'll have to do it on the road to totally convince me. For the Canes', this loss may have set them back a bit but they have another huge game coming up this week as the Sooners come calling. Protecting Harris will be key in that game. Great game by Hokie true freshman RB Ryan Williams (150 yards and 2 TD's):

Although both teams combined for 1,063 yards of offense, I though that Houston and Texas Tech would put more points on the scoreboard. Both offenses ran and passed up and down the field between the 20's only to bog down and settle for FG's. I had Tech winning this one and even though Houston QB Case Keenum was very good for most of the game (435 yards and 1 passing TD and 1 rushing TD) the mismanagement of clock and timeouts killed any hope the Red Raiders had to move into position for a game winning FG in the final minute. Tech used all their timeouts with 12:42 in the 4th quarter. On one series, QB Taylor Potts got to the line (Tech uses the no huddle offense) with 23 seconds on the down clock. He checked 4 or 5 times and after much confusion had to call their remaining timeout. I knew right there, it would come back to haunt them. That being said, a great win for the Cougars and if they can navigate their way through their schedule undefeated, they have a great shot to crash the BCS party:

Week 4 Previews & Picks

A very challenging upcoming weekend as there are many close games to call. Lets get started !

First off, the lone undefeated team from the Mountain West Conference, T.C.U. meets up with the Clemson Tigers on Saturday. T.C.U. is the last remaining hope for the Mountain West to gain a BCS bid, but after this weekend, I think that will evaporate. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has the Tigers improving every week and their defensive effort last week in a win over Boston College (where they gave up a total of 58 yards) was nothing short of sensational. QB play is still a concern for the Tigers as Kyle Parker has yet to flash any big play ability despite having receiving threat Jacoby Ford and C.J. Spiller, one of the most exciting players out of the backfield and returning kicks. The Horned Frogs of T.C.U. have been steady this year and already embarassed one ACC team (Virginia) to the tune of 34-7. The strength of the T.C.U. squad is the defense, especially All-American End, Jerry Hughes. I smell UPSET in this one as the home team ruins the Horned Frogs chance for BCS glory:

The "Battle for Indiana" as Notre Dame invades West Lafayette and the Purdue Boilermakers. First year coach Danny Hope will have to figure a way to contain the Irish offense. One major key to this game is the availability of Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen (turf toe). Reports out of South Bend are that Freshman, Dayne Crist out of Sherman Oaks, CA will start in place of the injured Clausen. Crist has some major upside but Clausen has been playing at a Heisman level. I believe the Irish will rely heavily on their running game, featuring Armando Allen, Robert Huges and company to control the line of scrimmage and the clock. Purdue does have a very good back in Ralph Bolden, who will get his yards, but in the end, no matter which Notre Dame QB starts or finishes the game, I like the Irish:

My Washington Huskies travel south to Stanford to take on Jim Harbaugh and the Cardinals. We all know I'm "Husky Pride" but there has to be a major letdown after such an emotional win last week and the week following that epic game. Stanford should be undefeated (blowing a 17-0 lead against Wake Forest) and rising star QB Andrew Luck will not need any to derail the Huskies. Watch for Stanford tailback, Toby Gerhart (reminds me of "Touchdown" Tommy Vardell) but with more speed, to rush for 100 + and Luck to exploit the young Huskies secondary. "IF" Washington coach Sarkisian can someone pull this one off....the Huskies will be truly back, but I just don't see it this week:

This is my EASY pick of the week. Hey, with this weeks difficult schedule I need the Longhorns to break up the UTEP Miners. Evidently, Colt McCoy was under the weather last weekend for the Texas Tech game which might help explain why he was a little off. No such luck this time around for coach Prices' Miners. McCoy will put up the usual McCoy numbers (300 yards, 3 TD's) and rush for 40-50 yards and another TD.   I like a Texas romp here:
PREDICTION:     Texas 45-UTEP (Univeristy of Texas El Paso) 10

A very intriguing matchup involving the Big East and the ACC as the Pitt Panthers meet N.C. State. The Panthers are off to their first 3-0 start since 2000 but their undefeated record finally ends here (sorry Hixson). QB Bill Stull (after playing well in a win over Navy last week) will return to his unreliable self and Wolfpack QB Russell Wilson will finally show some of that promise that has been expected of him this season.
PREDICTION:     N.C. State 27-Pittsburgh 17

L.S.U. goes on the road to battle Mississippi St. and new coach Dan Mullen (former Florida offensive coordinator). The Bulldogs have shown more offense this year under Mullen but this week it's time for the Tigers to finally WAKE UP and play like they are supposed to play. Too much talent on the Tigers side of the ball (offensive and defensive) for the Bulldogs to challenge. I know every game in the SEC is a battle but I like L.S.U. to step up bigtime in this game.
PREDICTION:    L.S.U. 38-Mississippi St. 13

Brian Kelly and his band of Bearcats play host to Fresno St. The Bulldogs of Fresno St. have played in some very close games (both losses) to Wisconsin and Boise St.   One thing Cincinnati has to deal with is Fresno tailback Ryan Mathews (who ripped Boise St. for over 200 yards). QB Tony Pike has been absolutely lighting up defenses and that should continue this week. I don't see Fresno St. stopping the Bearcats vaunted passing attack:
PREDICTION:     Cincinnati 43-Fresno St. 21

Speaking of the above mentioned Boise St., the Broncos meet up with Bowling Green of the MAC. Other than Houston (and we'll get to them later), Boise seems to be the only viable threat to crash the BCS party if they can avoid the pitfalls and manage to get through their schedule unscathed. The Broncos did get a scare out of Fresno last Friday, I don't see this game being close:
PREDICTION:     Boise St. 51-Bowling Green 10

Tate "May The" Forcier Be With You......can't help it, love this true freshman (more playmaking ability so far than the much more heralded Matt Barkley at USC). The Hoosiers of Indiana come calling in the Big 10 opener for both. Indiana has a strong offensive line and will test the Wolverine defense. Problem is, I don't think they can contain or slow down the Michigan offense. Look for the other freshman QB Dennard Robinson to see more action as he gets more adjusted to coach Rodgriguez' offensive system. Too much Maize and Blue that will turn the Hoosier defense Black and Blue !
PREDICTION:     Michigan 34-Indiana 14

Now for the start of the REALLY close and tough games to pick. Lets start with the Houston Cougars playing host to the Red Raiders from Texas Tech. This is the best a Houston Cougar team has looked since Bill Yeomans late 1970's teams (Danny Davis, Randy Love and Emmitt King). I actually liked the way Texas Tech battled back at Texas last week. They showed some true grit ! I also think Red Raider QB Taylor Potts is the REAL DEAL !   He is the BEST pro prospect in a lineage of Mike Leach QB's at Tech. He has size (6'-5", 220) and a cannon for an arm (very comparable to Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett). Houston QB Case Keenum has been outstanding this year and a great game by him will bring up the Heisman talk. "IF" the Cougs can get by Texas Tech, they will be favored in every one of their remaining games and a possible BCS berth at the end of the season. A very week conference (Conference USA) will hurt their chances but non-conference wins over Oklahoma St. (ranked #5 at the time) and Texas Tech should improve their positioning:   All being said, I really think that the Tech defense will "slow" down the Houston offensive machine and Potts will have a big day. High scoring affair but in the end, Potts and the Tech defense will make more plays than Keenum and the Cougar defense:

What a first SEC game for Ryan Mallett (400 yards and 5 TD's). Too bad the Hogs have NO defense. Alabama has superior talent on both sides of the ball. Playmakers at every position and in QB Greg McElroy, an upgrade from Parker-Wilson last year. Remember, super soph receiver Julio Jones has only caught FIVE passes all season long !   That dawg, won't hunt ! Mallett will get his yards, but will take some punishment from the Tide pass rush. I like Alabama's ability to run the ball with Mark Ingram to control the clock and limit Arkansas touches:
PREDICTION:     Alabama 41-Arkansas 17

After dismantling the B.Y.U. Cougars in what was the Seminoles most impressive performance in years, Florida St. takes on cross state foe South Florida. Orginally I thought this game would be played pretty even and pretty close. The problem is, All-Everything QB Matt Grothe is out for the year (torn ACL) and the Bulls have NO proven backup. Grothe is South Florida's career passing leader and playing without him the remainder of the year is not good news for the boys from Tampa. Noles' QB Christian Ponder took a big step in the opening game versus Miami and another in last weeks win over the Cougars. He is playing with poise and smarts ! I like the wide outs, especially Jarmon Fortson, a 6'-3", 220 freak of an athlete. He will create mismatches all over the field and the Noles' defense will get after whoever plays in the South Florida backfield:
PREDICTION:     Florida St. 33-South Florida 0

Revenge....can you say REVENGE ??? That's exactly what Penn St. is looking for as they host the Iowa Hawkeyes.   Iowa knocked Penn St. out of the BCS Championship game on a last second FG. Even though the Nittany Lion defense is less than full strength (linebacker Sean Lee out) and Navarro Bowman is less than 100%, I like the Penn St. offense (especially running back Evan Royster) to heat up and help out Darrell Clark and the passing game. Do remember, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz has won 6 out of the last 7 meetings with Joe Pa.   I like Paterno to turn the tables on Ferentz: Get Ready for the WHITE OUT !
PREDICTION:     Penn St. 20-Iowa 10

Jahvid Best takes his Heisman campaign to Eugene, OR and a date with the Ducks. Oregon has played better as of late but did not look that sharp in a win over Utah last week. They came up big in the kicking game (kick off return for a TD) and some big time punt yardage. Slowing down Best will be a chore. The best thing Cal has going (besides Best) is the QB play of Kevin Riley. I believe Oregon will stick 8 men in the box and MAKE Riley beat them with his arm. Good plan...except Best is so good, he can beat a stacked line...and he has had excellent blocking from a very good offensive line. Ducks QB Masoli has to play a mistake free game and FINALLY show some kind of a passing threat ! Oregon freshman RB LaMichael James has been effective.....he is good, but not the BEST..as in Jahvid BEST.
PREDICTION:     California 40-Oregon 31

The best for last.....Jacory Harris and his golden arm visit the hostile confines of Lane Stadium and the Hokies of Virginia Tech. The Miami offense has looked UNSTOPPABLE ! Harris has been throwing short, intermidiate, deep and to his receivers and backs with consistency and efficiency. Other than Clausen, there has been none finer !   The Tech offense struggled bigtime versus Nebraska last week but did hit the big play when they needed to in winning a close game. QB Tyrod Taylor can use his legs to escape the Canes' pressure but it is up to Bud Foster and that Va. Tech defense to slow down Harris and the Miami passing game. Easier said than done !   Miami is hurting a bit on the defensive line (missing DT Marcus Fortson and DT Jeremy Lewis) which effects the D-Line rotation that the Canes' like to use. Miami has the swagger back....tough game, a punch in the mouth game, a physical game, 75,000 screaming Hokie fans.....will go home dissapointed.

Week 4 (Previews & Picks)

There are tons of great games (at least on paper) this week so lets start with the ESPN Thursday night matchup between 4th ranked Mississippi and South Carolina. The Rebels come into this game undefeated but have yet to be tested. South Carolina has shown a prolific offense to date led by junior QB Stephen Garcia, who is finally living up to the expectations since his days as a prep QB at Plant H.S. in Florida. Spurrier has him playing at a high level and I smell UPSET in this one. Mississippi QB Jevan Snead has played well and will have to play a mistake free game and hit some big plays in the passing game to open up the running game for Cordera Eason and company. Snead has compiled a school record 8 straight games with multiple TD throws and will most likely continue that trend tonight. Another big plus for the Rebels is the return of defensive end Greg Hardy, one of the premier pass rushing ends in college football. He has had ankle/foot problems so far but will start this evening. All signs point to a comfortable Mississippi victory but I think this one is going to be close. A large margin victory by the Rebels will vault QB Snead into the Heisman race. In the Spurrier era, the Gamecockes are 5-2 under the lights. The Rebels will have to contain end Eric Norwood from harassing Snead into quick throws and key turnovers. Like I said, UPSET alert but in the end, a "healthy" (flu recovered) Mississippi Rebels team takes down South Carolina.

News and Notes

The AP Top 25 was released on Sunday and some teams made HUGE jumps.   Others fell outside the Top 10 and are in danger of dropping out of the poll completely (are you listening B.Y.U.). The Miami, FL. Hurricanes were not even ranked in the Top 25 three weeks ago, they currently sit 9th (and playing like it !). We'll find out more about the Canes' as they travel to Virginia Tech this weekend. If the Miami offense continues to light up the scoreboard, look for Offensive Coordinator, Mark Whipple to be a very sought after name once coaching vacancies open up in late November and into December. His work with QB Jacory Harris has been nothing sort of sensational, putting Harris in great positions and taking advantage of all the speed and skill at the receiver and running back positions. Another huge plus for Miami so far has been the play of the offensive line. They have protected Harris and opened up running lanes for Cooper and James.

USC (I'm tired of typing out Southern Cal.) dropped to 12th after their upset loss to UDub. It looks like QB Matt Barkley has the go ahead this week against Washington St. It's time for Pete Carroll and Offensive Coordinator Jeremy Bates to stop protecting the young QB and open up the playbook. That doesn't mean trick plays or gimicks...but let the kid throw intermediate to deep routes on first down. Throw screens to McKnight, quick slants and find TE Anthony McCoy over the middle for those 10-15 yard plays.   It sure looked to me like USC played "not to lose" and that will kill you everytime. The defense has played well enough but did miss the playmaking ability of safety Taylor Mays. Mays will be a game time decision this Saturday in Los Angeles. For the defense, it's time for DE Everson Griffen to step up and be a consistent dominator in both running and passing situations. The young linebackers are playing fairly well but the line has got to dominate the line of scrimmage, get penetration and pressure the QB's. I'm starting to wonder "IF" the Trojans are as talented as everyone says they are ? As early as this season is, one thing has been a common theme. As highly ranked as you might be, you have to play your B+ or A game to win (especially on the road) and in conference games. The name USC does not scare opponents they way it used to.

How about Tennessee safety Eric Berry ? I would put him in my top 5 for Heisman consideration. He IS THAT GOOD !   The best defensive player in the country BAR NONE ! He really controlled the game defensively last Saturday defending the pass and stepping up and stuffing the run in Monte Kiffin's defense. He reminds me of Ed Reed (but a more physical player than Reed).   If Berry does not suffer any injuries, he will be the FIRST defensive player taken in the 2010 N.F.L. Draft (which could be a Top 5 pick).

As much as I can't stand Notre Dame, I give credit where credit is due. Jimmy Clausen is having an outstanding year. He has matured and has thrown for over 300 yards in each of the three games he has played in combined with 9 TD's and ZERO INT's !   The offensive line has played well and RB Armando Allen has taken some of the pressure off Clausen. With the news that WR Michael Floyd is out for the regular season (broken collarbone, surgery today), Clausen loses his top playmaker and will have to incorportate Golden Tate, Duval Kamara and some talented freshman into the mix to pick up the slack. Based on performance, he has to be in the Heisman mix. As good as Clausen was on Saturday, Michigan St. really "choked" and should have won that game. Charlie Weis just got by this time.

My Heisman favorites have played "less favorable" this year. Even though Texas and Florida remain 1-2 and undefeated in the polls, QB's Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow have not played up to par. Their numbers are down in terms of yardage, TD's, completion percentage and third down efficiency. That along with Sooners QB Sam Bradfords injury, all signs point to Jahvid Best (if he continues to put up 100 yard games and multiple TD performances) to run away with the Heisman race. One of my Heisman darkhorses, Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli has totally imploded this season. He simply cannot complete any passes. I really thought after watching him in last years Bowl game, this would be his coming out party, I don't think he ever got invited to the party.

I will be introducing my Recruiting Special later on this week, so check out your favorite teams and I'll give you updates as to who has verbally committed and who has signed and who has the top classes (sources: Rivals & Max Preps). I did see a great HS game on ESPN last Friday night as California State Champ, Oaks Christian squeaked past defending Washington State Champion, Skyline 28-25. Interesting as the game was played in Seattle and the starting QB for Oaks Christian is Nick Montana. If the name sounds familiar, yes, Nick is the son of Hall of Famer and 49ers legend, Joe Montana. Also, Nick Montana has verbally committed to Washington (a major coup for Steve Sarkisian). Rivals has Montana the 12th rated senior QB in the country.

How about Florida St. ?   I think this was the biggest game in the last 10 years that Bobby Bowden has coached.   They finally showed some DICIPLINE (very few penalties) and showcased their stud cornerback, Greg Reid. He played tremendous, blanketing WR McKay Jacobson and intercepting a Max Hall pass and returning it 46 yards for a Seminole TD.

Watch QB Todd Reising and the Kansas Jayhawks. He is putting up impressive numbers as the Jayhawks are 3-0 as they get set to open up their Big-12 schedule. The Big-12 North is shaping up to be a 3 team race between Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri.   The Huskers play at Missouri on Oct. 8th and Kansas on November 14th. Those games should determine who plays Texas (okay, I'm presuming the Horns' will win the South). Nebraska showed major improvement and should have beaten Virginia Tech on the road. A couple of defensive breakdowns in the final minute cost the Huskers bigtime. Also, UCLA showed the nation that Rick Neueheisel has the Bruins back. They lost their starting QB before the Kansas St. game and still managed to ride a solid running game and stiffling defense to wax the Wildcats.

Week 3 Playmakers

1. Donald Butler, Linebacker Washington Huskies
In leading an inspired defensive effort, the senior linebacker from Sacramento, CA recorded 12 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 fumble recovery and 1 interception helping Washington stun USC 16-13. Butler's interception was late in the 4th quarter and inside the Husky 25 yard line, killing what could have been a game winning drive by the Trojans.

2. Jahvid Best, Running Back California Golden Bears

Best carried 26 times for 131 yards and 5 TD's (setting a school record) in a 35-21 victory of Minnesota. With this performance, Best should move into the top 5 regarding Heisman talk. He has some big time opponents coming up with games at Oregon and home to Southern Cal to state his case.

3. Clemson Tigers defense. Coming off a difficult last minute defeat to Georgia Tech, the Tigers bounced back with an inspiring defense effort holding Boston College to a TOTAL of 58 yards. B.C. did not register their initial first down until 1:48 left in the 3rd quarter. Clemson also harrassed freshman QB JustinTuggle, sacking him 4 times and pressured him all game long.

Week 3 Final Wrap Up

Just when I thought I had all the answers, along comes week 3 !   This is why there is nothing better than college football....expect the UNEXPECTED.....UPSETS...SURPRISES, STUNNERS and SHOCKERS..lets get started.

Hey, I'm Husky Pride...I love my Huskies but I never thought they were going to actually BEAT Southern Cal. !   A couple of things to take away from this game. For Washington Jake Locker made the throws when he needed to. He showed arm strength and touch and also his running ability (1 rushing TD). RB Chris Polk ran for some tough yards and Locker's receivers made some nice catches, especially true freshman James Johnson. Trojan QB Aaron Corp played more like Aaron Corpse ! He was lifeless for much of the game. He was just awful, the receivers again failed to get open, even on the intermediate routes and the running game (which did pile up over 200 yards) failed at critical times inside Husky territory. In fact Southern Cal. went a MIND NUMBING 0-10 on third down conversions....yes...ZERO for TEN !   Even with this HUGE win, the Huskies are still 2 recruiting classes away from challenging for a Pac-10 title. For Southern Cal., stick Barkley in there once he is healthy, open up the playbook and play to WIN and NOT TO LOSE !
FINAL:     Washington 16-Southern Cal. 13

One of my ultimate LOCKS of the day, B.Y.U. playing at home against a sullen Florida St. team....so what happens ? The Seminoles take the Cougars behind the woodshed and put a whuppin' on Max Hall and company. This one totally caught me off guard. Florida St. BARELY got by Division 1-AA Jacksonville St. last week and trample B.Y.U. ?   Noles' QB Christian Ponder threw for 2 TD's and ran for another. Florida St. finished 12-15 on third down efficiency and also scored all 8 times they had the ball inside the B.Y.U. 20 yard line.   Great game plan....and defensive schemes really had QB Max Hall confused (3 INT's). For Florida St., amazing bounceback (also for the ACC) and for B.Y.U., their BCS dreams have all but evaporated.
FINAL:     Florida St. 54-B.Y.U. 28

Revenge was on the menu as the Longhorns handled Texas Tech winning by 10. This game was suprisingly closer than I thought.   I figured Colt McCoy would carve up the Red Raider defense. Considering the offensive firepower on either side, the halftime score was 10-7 Texas ?   What gives ? Second half, the QB's started heating up. McCoy finished 24 for 34 for ONLY 205 yards, 1 TD's (2 INT's). In a losing cause QB Taylor Potts completed an astonishing 46 passes in 62 attempts (he'll need Tommy John surgery after this performance). for 3 TD's and and INT. Eventually the Red Raiders offensive line began to break down and Potts took some realy shots (see Sergio Kindle sack late in the 4th quarter) which led to a Longhorn TD. But, if this week has taught me anything..it's just WIN !   Forget about style points....it's too difficult week to week.
FINAL:     Texas 34-Texas Tech 24

This was another surprising close finish.   I figured the Gators would pour it on the Vols down in the swamp. Tennessee showed they have a very stingy defense, holding Tim Tebow to 115 yards (with 1 INT). Tebow did rush for 1 TD. The Vols continue to get shoddy QB play from Jonathan Crompton. Luckily for Tennessee, they have a stellar recruiting class coming in next year (hopefully a new QB).   But as I previously stated, after watching games this weekend, a win is a win and Florida will take it.
FINAL:     Florida 23-Tennessee 13

Cincinnati of the Big East invaded Corvallis, OR and won a very big game for themselves and the conference. QB Tony Pike continues to shine going 31-49 for 332 yards and 2 TD's (with 1 INT). The surprising Bearcats defense held Jacquizz Rodgers to an average of 3.7 yards per carry and just 1 TD. This win in a tough environment (remember the Trojans have lost TWICE here in the last 5 years) should elavate Cincinnati into the top 15 in the polls.
FINAL:     Cincinnati 28-Oregon St. 18

Another very close game that I thought would have been a total blow out.   Notre Dame barely gets by Michigan St. by 3. Jimmy Clausen again played superbly completing 22-31 for 300 yards and 2 TD's. On the downside, the Irish may have lost WR Michael Floyd for the season to a broken collarbone. Michigan St. had a chance to take the lead with 1:10 left...but QB Kirk Cousins missed a wide open receiver in the end zone (there was NOT a Notre Dame defender within 10 yards of him). The Irish then picked off Cousins' next pass to ice the win. Notre Dame certainly has to address their defense in giving up back to back 30 point plus games.
FINAL:    Notre Dame 33-Michigan St. 30

I lost this one as I thought Nebraska was ready to make a statement. They did make one, that they could not punch it into the Tech end zone FIVE times inside the 10 yard line and had to settle for 4 FG's. Other than the first drive and last drive of the game, the Hokies offense showed nothing but Tyror Taylor hit the big pass at the end as Virginia Tech prevailed. Huskers QB Zac Lee was less than effecitve throwing 3 INT's. Nebraska did roll up 207 yards rushing (Roy Helu team leading 169 yards). Back to the pack for the Huskers and for Virginia Tech a nice bounceback performance after their loss to Alabama.
FINAL:     Virginia Tech 16-Nebraska 15

Talk about your offensive shootouts ! Georgia and Arkansas combined for 93 points and 985 yards in a Bulldogs victory.   I had Arkansas in this one.   I didn't realize that the Razorbacks have absolutely NO defense (run or pass). Georgia QB Joe Cox ripped the Hog defense for 375 yards and 5 TD's.   In a losing effort Ryan Mallette threw for 408 yards and 5 TD's in his initial SEC game. I think the SEC is up for grabs....it's going to be a week by week process.
FINAL:     Georgia 52-Arkansas 41

Jahvid Best is truly turning out to be "The Best" RB in the nation rushing for 133 yards and 5 TD's !   Minnesota did make a game of it coming back from 14-0 and 21-7 deficits. Gotta' love the Gophers new home "The Gopher Hole"...52,000 screaming fans. Great atmosphere, but it looks like Cal is the class of the PAC-10 (at least this week).   They have the Trojans coming to Berkley in a few weeks...that should cement themselves as leaders for the Rose Bowl or at worst a BCS spot.
FINAL:     California 35-Minnesota 21

The nations longest winning streak (16 games) is history, compliments of Oregon.   The Ducks held on for a close victory at home. RB LaMichael James ran for 156 yards and a TD to lead the Duck offense. Jermeiah Masoli continues to struggle in the Oregon passing game completing only 4 of 16 passes for 95 yards and 1 INT.   Masoli did run the ball better (47 yards and a pair of TD's). Utah QB Terrance Cain accounted for 236 total yards but through 2 costly INT's.   After riding high for the first 2 weeks, the Mountain West has come back down to earth after this weekend.
FINAL:     Oregon 31-Utah 24

The Pitt Panthers jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead in route to the victory of the Midshipmen of Navy. Pittsburgh received some excellent QB play from the normally inconsistent Bill Stull.   Stull completed 17 of 24 for 245 yards and 1 TD.   The Panthers are off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2000.
FINAL:     Pittsburgh 27-Navy 14

The UConn "running on all cylinders" game was in fine form in Waco, TX on Saturday. RB's Andre Dixon (149 yards and 3 TD's) and Jordan Todman (103 yards) powered the Huskes to the upset. More amazing, the Husky defense held Baylor QB Robert Griffin in check and caused 2 fumbles which resulted in Husky TD's in the second quarter. This is the second straight strong performance for the UConn defense. The Big East performed well this weekend with (Cincinnati, Pitt, South Florida and UConn) coming away with out of conference victories.
FINAL:     Connecticut 30-Baylor 22

On Thursday evening, QB Jacory Harris threw for 287 yards and 3 TD's leading the Miami, FL. Hurricanes past Georgia Tech 33-17.   Miami pretty much dominated the game completely shutting down the triple option attack of the Yellow Jackets. In fact, RB Jonathan Dwyer only carried 3 times before leaving the game with an undisclosed injury. On offense, the Canes' offensive line played very well and gave Harris plenty of time to find receivers running open across the middle. New Offensive Coordinator Mark Whipple looks like he's got the Miami offense humming and it looks like Harris has settled in and is very comfortable with the offensive play calling and overall scheme. As of now, it looks like Miami is the class of the ACC. We'll know more tomorrow after Virginia Tech hosts Nebraska and of course next week, the Canes' travel north to Blacksburg, VA.

In a shootout, the 10th ranked Broncos of Boise St. outlasted Fresno St. 51-34. Broncos QB Kellen Moore threw for 181 yards and 3 TD's.   In a losing effort, Bulldogs TB Ryan Mathews rushed for 234 yards on 19 carries that included TD runs of 66, 60 and 62 yards. Boise jumped out to a quick 24-3 lead and it looked like it was over but to Fresno State's credit (and Mathews running) the Bulldogs made a valliant comeback.   I think once Boise St. took that big lead in the first half then kind of took their foot off the pedal. Remember they took apart Fresno St. last year 61-10. The teams combined for 987 yards of total offense. Boise St. still has to travel to Tulsa (which could be tough) and Hawaii. In the future, the Broncos defense will have to tackle much better in open space.

Week 3 (Preview and Picks)

It's 11:00 and I'm currently watching ANOTHER replay of the U.S.C.-Ohio St. game. I think ESPN has shown it 5 times since Saturday. Okay, enough about that game, lets take a look at this weeks games starting with Thursday nights showdown.

In what could be the ACC's best two teams, the Hurricanes of Miami, FL. welcome the Ramblin' Wreck of Georgia Tech. Last week, Tech exploded out to a 24-7 halftime lead over Clemson then held on for a 3 point win. Miami, FL. came back against rival Florida St. How could you not like Jacory Harris ? I love this kid (and I just thought he was a runner) but he threw for over 300 yards and 3 TD's against the Noles'. Georgia Tech comes in with Head Coach Paul Johnson's triple option attack led by QB Josh Nesbitt and Heisman hopefully RB Jonathan Dwyer. Even though the option attack will cause problems, I like the Canes' speed on defense and the Miami offense to rack up points. Harris to Cooper..TD, TD, TD !
PREDICTION: Miami, FL. 38-Georgia Tech 24

Before Saturday's games, another big one, this time on Friday night as the Bulldogs of Fresno St. play host to the 12 ranked Broncos of Boise St. Boise St. comes in 2-0 with a huge opening game victory of Oregon and a blowout victory 43-0 over Miami, OH. Fresno St. is coming off a dissapointing 2 OT loss to Wisconsin. This is a traditionally tough game for Boise as in recent years, Bulldogs coach Pat Hill has had some very competitive squads and always plays a top notch out of conference schedule. This is the opening WAC (Western Athletic Conference) for both teams. I think the fans will be into it and Fresno will keep it close but just too much talent for the Broncos (I know Cooler666 will love this pick !). Broncos sophomore QB Kellen Moore has been impressive and should throw for close to 300. I usually don't focus in on defense backs but as I said in Week 1, Boise St. might have the best pair of corners (as a duo) in the country.
PREDICTION: Boise St. 34-Fresno St. 26

REVENGE...is always a sweet thing and it's something the Longhorns of Texas will get against undefeated Texas Tech. Most can remember last years amazing finish as the Red Raiders spoiled the Longhorns BCS Championship game hopes with a last second pitch and catch from Graham Harrell to Michael Crabtree. Both those players have moved on (although Crabtree looks like he's sitting out the year unwilling to sign with the S.F. 49ers). This will be Texas QB Colt McCoy's Heisman breakout and will put him front and center for this years race. I think McCoy will have a MONSTER game after "subpar" games so far (at least for him). The Texas defense will be fired up and pressure Junior QB Taylor Potts. Potts did throw for 7 TD's last week but this isn't RICE ! McCoy to Shipley....will be ringing over the PA !
PREDICTION: Texas 43-Texas Tech 17

Nebraska travels to Blacksburg, VA to meet up with the Hokies of Virginia Tech. I believe this game will open up some eyes nationally and put the Cornhuskers back in the national spotlight. I know Tech has a nice defense (thanks to longtime defense coordinator Bud Foster) and are always excellent on special teams but this is NOT Bill Callahans Huskers. Pelini has these guys playing at a level. Coming out party for Nebraska QB Zac Lee. I think the Nebraska defense will keep Hokies QB Tyrod Taylor in check and watch for mammoth Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh (honestly, I don't know how to pronounce it !!!) but all I know is what I see and at 6'-4" 325lbs. he might be the most dominating defensive lineman in the college game.
PREDICTION: Nebraska 27-Virginia Tech 13

"And the 2009 Heisman Trophy winner, Jimmy Clausen"....??? Huh ??? As of right now, if you look at quality of play and statistics, Clausen is right up there. As long as Notre Dame wins at least 9 games, he'll be in the top 7 or maybe top 5. You can't blame Clausen for the Irish loss last week (blame some dropped balls, penalties and some bad offensive play calling at the end of the game). That being said, I love Notre Dame to bounce back in a big way at home to trounce Michigan St. The Spartans suffered a heartbreaking loss to Central Michigan on a last second field goal. It won't be that close this time ! Clausen throws for a TON and if WR Michael Floyd is fully healthy (nicked up at the end of the Michigan game) look for a HUGE game from him.
PREDICTION: Notre Dame 33-Michigan St. 10

Do you think Gators coach Urban Meyer has had this game circled since Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin shot his mouth off this spring ??? Claiming that Meyer was "cheating" in recruiting practices and so on. Kiffin is backing off those comments this week but I guarantee you that Meyer might be more pumped than his players ! If the weather is dry...I love the Gators to run it up on the Vols. Tennessee has some injuries on the defense front and Tim Tebow is healthy ! This one could get ugly early !
PREDICTION: Florida 44-Tennessee 10

Another interesting game as the Bearcats of Cincinnati carry the Big East banner to take on the Beavers of Oregon St. "IF" Cincinnati can come away with a win here (where Southern Cal. lost last year) they could make a huge run toward a BCS spot. That being said, I like the overall team speed of Oregon St. Watch for the Rodgers brothers (James & Jacquizz). James is listed at 5'-7 and Jacquizz 5'-8". James is the WR and Jacquizz the RB. Word is, Jacquizz is having ankle problems limiting his practice time this week but should be a go for game time. Cincinnati QB Tony Pike is having tremendous season, so far. The Beaver DB's might bait him this week but I do like Cincinnati to keep it close.
PREDICTION: Oregon St. 35-Cincinnati 27

Now I know I have some Pitt Panther fans checking out my blog. Navy will NOT be an easy game (just ask Ohio St.). They run the option attack (similar to Georgia Tech) which is very difficult to game plan for, especially in one week. I do think if Pitt can stay away from turnovers (which always seem to plague Dave Wannstedt's teams) they can control this game in the trenches. That being said, I'm not sold on 5th year senior QB Bill Stull but the alternative is not much better in backup Pat Bostick (former PA prep superstar). The Panthers of course lost RB "Shady" McCoy and will rely on freshman Dion Lewis and sophomore Shariff Harris. The Panthers have an N.F.L. prospect in WR Jonathan Baldwin (too bad he doesn't have a QB to throw it to him) and have 2 very good offensive lineman in Lucas Nix and John Malecki (both excellent recruits swayed from rival Penn St.). Navy QB Ricky Dobbs is dangerous and can pass as well as run. Navy is a very diciplined team (like most service academy schools). This is going to be very close and Navy could very well pull the upset, it wouldn't surprise me...but I can't pick against my good buddy Hixson !
PREDICTION: Pittsburgh 23-Navy 20

Ten years ago, I never would have thought this one...B.Y.U. will erase Florida St. in a big way. Forget all this so called "athletic ability" of the Noles'. They may be able to run the 40 in 4.3-4.4 but they are one of the most UNDICIPLINED (opposite of Navy) teams I've ever seen. Overated recruiting classes OR lack of good coaching. C'mon, is Jimbo Fisher really the answer to the Seminoles recent offensive woes ? They don't have the "playmakers" as in the past (Deion Sanders, Derrick Brooks, Andre Wadsworth etc...). This will be possibly the last chance for the Cougars to make a NATIONAL STATEMENT (other than conference games Utah and T.C.U.). Max Hall will have another 300 yard plus day with 3 or 4 TD's. Harvey Unga is finally healthy and will kill Florida St. on draw plays and out of the backfield. B.Y.U. has a very underated defense. They fly to the ball, gang tackle and apply QB pressure with various blitz packages. The one bright spot in this game for Florida St. is B.Y.U. losing 2 starters on the O-Line. Might cause problems on audible calls but....
PREDICTION: B.Y.U. 45-Florida St. 17

What is new Husky coach Steve Sarkisians reward for winning his first game last week (and the first for Washington since November 2008) ? A visit from the 3rd ranked Trojans of Southern California. Sarkisian spent 7 years on Pete Carroll's staff (as a graduate assistant, QB coach and the last 2 years, offensvie coordinator). He certainly knows the system. The only problem is lack of talent on offense, defense and special teams. Starting QB Matt Barkley is "questionable" as of this writing (Sept. 17th) due to a sore throwing shoulder. Backup QB Aaron Corp has gotten all the first team reps this week and is ready to step in for Barkley. I think it will be a game time decision to see if Barkley can handle the outside throws on that bad shoulder. Corp is a much more mobile QB than Barkley. Look for the Trojans to use their size advantage along the offensive line and ground it out on the Huskies. I like the Trojans to use their bevy of talented backs ro rush for over 250 yards and make it easy on whoever is behind center. Hey, I love my Huskies but Jake Locker needs more help. He needs some time and a few more playmakers (although WR's Aguillar and Johnson have played will this year).
PREDICTION: Southern Cal. 37-Washington 13

Cal travels to Minnesota. Okay, if the Gophers pull this one out...nope, don't think so. I think California is really focused this season and so far, QB Kevin Riley has looked good. Having perhaps the nations best TB in Jahvid Best is a major plus ! I like Best to have a huge day (another Heisman hopefull).
PREDICTION: California 38-Minnesota 17

The Pre-Season ACC coaches poll had Boston College finishing 6th in the Atlantic Divison. So far B.C. has surprised people. They will continue to do so as they go to into Clemson and take it to the Tigers. C.J. Spiller not fully healthy. Clemson QB Kyle Parker is not that impressive and Boston College ALWAYS has strong line play on both the offensive and defensive lines (check the N.F.L. rosters !). The Eagles have some underated RB's and WR's.
PREDICTION: Boston College 24-Clemson 20

UConn travles to Baylor. Not sure about the health of Husky QB Zach Frazier....but the health of Baylor QB Robert Griffin is great. He is a HANDFUL and the Baylor offense has speed to burn. I like the home team in this one.
PREDICTION: Baylor 33-UConn 14

I'm going out on a limb on this one....I like Arkansas to upset Georgia. The Bulldogs have looked out of sorts so far this year. The usually stingy defense has been less than stellar. The offense picked it up in last weeks win over South Carolina. Razorback coach Bobby Petrino can really put an offense together and I expect them to roll up yards in this game.
PREDICTION: Arkansas 28-Georgia 24

Kansas St. should just stay home this weekend. No letdown for the Bruins as U.C.L.A. should cruise against the Wildcats. The U.C.L.A defense throttled Tennessee QB Jonathan Crompton last week and will do the same to Kansas St. There were a number of suspensions this week on the Bruin team due to diciplinary actions. Hopefully this will not cause a distraction, then again, I don't think it will matter:
PREDICTION: U.C.L.A.-40-Kansas St. 7

Picking my last game was very difficult. I really like the Utah Utes. I like coach Kyle Whittingham. But so far, even though the Utes have jumped out to a 2-0 start, they haven't been very impressive. This is a payback game that Oregon will finally rise to the occasion on (unlike the opening week versus Boise St.). The Ducks piled up 36 points last week (14 of them from the defense). I think Utah is a year away from a great season, they will win 8 this year. The Ducks will show their determination and pride and win their second game in a row.

Playmakers for Week Two

ESPN has their "Helmet Stickers", I have my "Playmakers 3" unless someone out there can come up with a catchier phrase !

Here are my 3 Playmakers for Week 2:

1. Tate Forcier, Quarterback University of Michigan

All Forcier did was complete 23 of 33 passes for 240 yards and 2 TD's including the game winner with 11 seconds left. Forcier did throw an interception that led to a Notre Dame TD but came back strong. He also rusned for 70 yards including a 31 TD scamper in the 4th quarter.

2. Jimmy Clausen, Quarterback Notre Dame

Even in a losing cause, you can't blame Jimmy Clausen. The junior from Thousan Oaks, CA threw for 336 yards and 3 TD's and no INT's. If he keeps up these kinds of stats (which I believe he will) he might land himself in the middle of the Heisman race.

3. Case Keenum, Quarterback University of Houston

In orchestrating a 45-35 upset win over 5th ranked Oklahoma St., Keenun was at times spectacular and other times lucky. Keenum threw for 366 hards and 3TD's with 1 INT. In a 4th and goal with just over 5 minutes remaining, his pass was deflected by a Cowboy defender right into the arms of a teamate for his third TD.

I dropped a little this week going 12-3. Hey there were some tough ones out there ! I lost on Ohio St., Notre Dame and Oklahoma St.

A couple of late games that maybe nobody saw, but a good one in Eugene, OR as Ducks coach Chip Kelly gets his first win 38-36 over a Purdue. A great game that came down to the end. The Oregon defense accounted for 2 TD's and stopped the Boilermakers on a game tying 2 point conversion attempt with 1:01 remaining. Ducks QB Jeremiah Masoli threw for 166 and one score and also rushed for 72 yards (more like it).
FINAL: Oregon 38-Purdue 36

The Utah Utes finally got the ship righted scoring 17 4th quarter points in beating a pesky San Jose St. squad 24-14. Terrance Cain (the National JUCO player of the year) completed 18 of 31 for 247 yards and 1 TD. Utah could have piled up more points but lost 2 fumbles inside Spartan territory and also missed 3 makeable field goals. Coach Whittingham better get the kicking game straightened out because it's going to be a tough Mountain West Conference this year. With the victory, Utah extended the nations longest active winning streak to 16 games.
FINAL: Utah 24-San Jose St. 14

In a pouring rainstorm, the L.S.U. Tigers slogged their way to a 23-9 victory over Vanderbilt. This one was close for most of the night as playing in front of 93,000 didn't stop the Commodores from hanging in. The Tigers led by only 7 with 9:42 remaining, then RB Keiland Williams ran for a pair of scores as the much bigger offensive line of L.S.U. wore down the smaller Commodores. So, far 2-0 for the Bayou Bengals but they have yet to look impressive. With some big upcoming games, the Tigers better get their passing game and their overall team defensive game in gear.
FINAL: L.S.U. 23-Vanderbilt 9

Despite trailing 20-6 late in the third quarter, the Tiger offense finally got rolling behind 124 yards and the game winning touchdown from tailback Derrick Washington. Heralded sophomore QB Blaine Gabbert came back to earth after throwing for only 44 yards in the first half but showed the maturity of a future star finishing the game completing 20-33 for 172 yards and 2 second half TD's.
FINAL: Missouri 27-Bowling Green 20

Final Thoughts

Just waiting for the end of the Utah-San Jose St. game, currently 7-7 in the 3rd quarter. I knew the Spartans would give the Utes a tough game.

So far, I'm 8-3, losing the Oklahoma St., Ohio St. and Notre Dame games. I've already addressed two of those so lets discuss the Trojan comeback.

TWO observations were made during this game. The first, I give the Buckeyes alot of credit, especially on their defensive line as for most of the game, I thought they outplayed what many people are calling the best offensive line in college football. The second, Southern Cal has no real wide receiver threats. I thought (even though his stats were average) Matt Barkley played a very good game. If you noticed, even when he completed passes, there was always an Ohio St. defensive back draped all over a receiver. At times, Barkley had time to throw but had to hold the ball as nobody could get open. The Trojan receivers showed absolutely NO separation at all..NONE ! They really miss Ronald Johnson more than I thought they would. They also could not get Joe McKnight in space...and when they finally did, he made some big playes (specifically in that last game winning drive). Terell Pryor made some big throws and some big mistakes. I still think that if Pryor were able to run more and stretch out the Trojans defense, they could have maybe had a chance to tack on another 7 points. Southern Cal. WILL lose at least one or possibly two more games. I think they were a little exposed, but will most likely be there in the end knocking on the BCS door.

Amazing Endings !

I really thought Notre Dame would wear down the Wolverines but kudos to Coach Rodriguez and the Maize and Blue. A fantastic game that came down to the end as Michigan QB Tate Forcier threw a 5 yard pass to Greg Matthews with 11 seconds remaining for the winning TD. Forcier has cemented himself as the starter for the remainder of his Michigan career. He also showed he can take off and sprint to daylight evidenced by his 33 yard TD run. In a losing effort, Jimmy Clausen played spectacular throwing for over 300 yards again and 3 TD's. He was victimized by 2 drops in the 4th quarter that could have really cost the Irish a chance to win the game. Notre Dame will still get to a BCS Bowl (which is my prediction) but as great as the offense has looked 2 weeks in a row, I was less than impressed with the Notre Dame defense. Michigan does not have the playmakers at wideout that Notre Dame does and Forcier is not surrounded by that kind of offensive talent and yet they got open time and time again in the seams of the Irish secondary. But honestly, a great game that could have gone either way, Wayne's World...time to strut as your Wolverines are now in my Top 15 with that win !

What in the name of Barry Switzer is going on with the Big-12 today ? I knew Houston had a run n' gun offense but to actually go in and defeat Oklahoma St., a major surprise. Cougar QB Case Keenum put up huge numbers throwing for 366 yards and 3 TD's and Houston scored 21 4th quarter points after squandering a 24-7 lead in beating the Cowboys 45-35. It seemed like late in the 4th quarter, Oklahoma St. would drive to win the game but a Zac Robinson to Dez Bryant pass deflected off the outstretched arms of Bryant into the hands of corner Jamal Robinson who returned the pass 32 for the winning margin. Oklahoma St. could not take prosperity...gaining a number 5 ranking in the national polls and then following up a huge win over Georgia with dropping this heartbreaker. It looked like the Cowboys were just not ready to play and falling behind by such a margin took it's toll on the boys from Stillwater. Houston coach Kevin Sumlin rises up the ladder for hot coaches:

Most of the experts had Tennessee playing in front of 112,000 screaming Rocky Top fans taking care of business against the visiting Bruins of U.C.L.A. Not so fast my friends (sorry Mr. Corso, stole a line from you). I had this one right as the Bruins came east and played a very inspired game showing that Rick Neiheisel really has U.C.L.A. on the upswing. Redshirt Freshman QB Kevin Prince played well and avoided key turnovers and the Bruin defense (which is vastly underated) shut down the vaunted Tennessee running game. I told you U.C.L.A. was not Western Kentucky ! Better luck next time Coach Kiffin...you have a date in the swamp !

Talk about NOT accepting prosperity....in the 2nd quarter Bowling Green in shutting out Missouri 10-0 at Columbia ? This one I didnt' even pick figuring it was an afterthought, the Tigers better get going as the MAC has already pulled one upset today (ask Michigan St.). I would think Mizzou would get rolling in the second half....we'll have to wait and see. Check back later for a wrap up of this one.

I told you all that Wyoming would stay close for a quarter, which they did, then the Longhorns stampede ran over the helpless Cowboys in winning 41-10. The Horns' ONLY led 13-10 at halftime but Colt McCoy rushed for 1 TD and threw for 337 yards and 3 second half TD's in the rout.
FINAL: Texas 41-Wyoming 10

Another slow start by the Gators against Troy...then BOOM....the Gators took off as did Tim Tebow who threw for a career tying high 4 TD's and ran for 1 in a 56-6 shallacking of Troy. The Gator defense allowed just 139 total yards to a normally high octane Troy offense shows that they are eager and ready to open up their SEC season next week against Tennessee. Poor Lane Kiffin, it ain't gonna' be pretty. The Gator backs (Demps and Rainey) and averaged 8.8 yards per carry. Any time Tebow has a running attack like that, he's going to be tough to beat.

It's 8:10....Southern Cal. - Ohio St. ready for kickoff ! I'm taking the Buckeyes, but I haven't been right on this Saturday, we'll see.

Some early great games as the Central Michigan last second victory over Michigan St. leads off todays games. Fantastic game as Chippewa QB Dan LeFevour throws for 327 yards and 3 TD's. Amazing ending as Central Michigan scores with 34 seconds left, goes for 2 to win it and is denied. The ensuing onside kick is a perfectly executed thing of beauty as the kicking team not only recovers but runs it down inside the Michigan St. 40. After missing his initial FG attempt from 48 yards, the Spartans called for offisde. Refs move the ball up 5 yards and Andrew Aguilla gets a reprive and just snakes it inside the left goal post from 43 yards out and the win 29-27.

The Big-10 loses the above but survives two scares. First, Wisconsin goes to 2 OT to pull out a victory over the Fresno St. Bulldogs. Could be the coming out party for huge tailback John Clay (6'-2", 235). And Northwestern holds on for a slim victory over MAC opponent Eastern Michigan as kicker Stefan Demos boots a 49 yarder in the waning seconds.

The UConn, North Carolina game was played in a rainsoaked stadium and I was very impressed with the Husky defense. Unfotunately for UConn, starting QB Zach Frazier injured his knee in the third quarter and UConn could never quite get on track after that. North Carolina looked very sluggish with a non existent running game for 3 1/2 quarters. The winning points came on a safety (thanks to a holding penalty from inside the 3 yard line) and Carolina held on. I did have the Tar Heels in this one but was not very impressed with Coach Davis' troops on offense. Liked what I saw of Dartmouth H.S. own Jordan Todman, 81 yards and 1 TD. Final in this one, North Carolina 12-UConn 10.

Okay, here are some bonus picks before the noontime games start:

The Oregon Ducks meet the Purdue Boilermakers of the Big-10 after a very dissapointing showing in Boise on opening night. So much has happened to my pre season Top 10 team. First, the Ducks offense just could not do anything against Boise St. Secondly, quarterback Jeremiah Masoli refused to step and and run (which is why he was so successful last year) and third, starting tailback LaGarrette Blount has been suspended for the year by Head Coach Chip Kelly. Freshman LaMichael James takes over and I think the Ducks will finally kick it in gear. They better or their season is toast ! Purdue beat up on Toledo last week (which actually doesn't look so bad now that Toledo destroyed Colorado last night). That being said, I love Oregon in front of one the most difficult places for opposing teams to play in:

Nothing like a Saturday battle in Baton Rouge, LA. to get the juices flowing ! I think it's time for the Tigers to show their teeth and really open up the playbook. I expect the defense to swarm all over Vanderbilt and pressure QB's McKenzi Adams or Larry Smith. New defensive coordinator John Chavous plays a very blitz oriented and agressive stunting fronts so look for chaos in the Commodores backfield. On the Tiger offense front, it would be nice to see true freshman QB Russell Shepard on the field more and with the ball in his hands and NOT playing a decoy role. Big game for QB Jordan Jefferson:

Just because I have to pick this game (and they are my favorite team) my Washington Huskies are primed to win their first game since November 2007 ! Idaho may present a few early problems but then I like the Huskies to roll it up on offense. If Washington can protect QB Jake Locker, look for number 10 to pass for over 200 and rush for 50 +. Idaho ? Well, Huskies defensive coordinator was the Vandals Head Coach 6 years ago.....

Starting with the most attractive matchup of the weekend, the Southern Cal. Trojans visiting 'THE" Ohio St. Buckeyes. Okay, an upset right off the bat ! I like Ohio St. to rebound in a big way from their lackluster showing versus Navy last week. Buckeye QB Terrell Pryor will have a HUGE day throwing on the run and taking off on designed QB draws and option carries wide. The Trojans have excellent defensive speed but can be a little over agressive and over run plays that will create some nice cut back lanes for the Buckeye backs. I believe Trojan QB Matt Barkley will struggle a little especially in the opening 2 or 3 posessions leading to a possible and crucial turnover. Ohio St. defensive end Thaddeus Gibson blew me away with his speed and ability to run down the line, taking great angles to make the stop in last weeks win. A very close game but I like:
PREDICTION: Ohio St. 24-Southern Cal. 20

Here is a pretty easy one as my #1 ranked Longhors travel to to Laramie, WY to take on the Cowboys (not Dallas) of Wyoming. Now I know the Mountain West is a very good conference and "maybe" Wyoming stays with Texas for a quarter, but after that the talent takes over, Colt McCoy shines, the Texas running attack runs roughshod over the helpless Pokes and the Longhorn defense smothers RB James Davis....HOOK EM' HORNS':
PREDICTION: Texas 51-Wyoming 17

I guess I can take it easy on Urban Meyer and his Gators for starting off the season with a couple of "cream puffs". Troy can certainly score points but NOT against the Gators and NOT in the swamp. Tim Tebow might play a little more than a half and although losing freshman speedster Andre Dubose will hurt a little, Florida has more than enough speed to run up and down the field against a much slower Troy defense:

This is a nice matchup and a rematch of last year as the ACC and Big East tangle at Rentshler Field (Capacity 40,000). The Huskies are breaking in a new QB and lose a ton of talent in the form of RB Donald Brown and CB Darius Butler not to mention OT William Beatty. I like Caronlina's defense to win this game. DT's Marvin Austin and Cam Thomas can stuff the run and Oklahoma transfer Jordan Nix is an up and coming contributor. This is Butch Davis' third year in Chapel Hill and the third time is a charm:
PREDICTION: North Carolina 34-Connecticut 13

Boise St. takes to the blue turf to host the Miami, OH. Redhawks. Sorry, Miami cannot suit up Big Ben so I don't think (barring a MAJOR letdown) that the Broncos will take their foot off the peddle. I like Kellen Moore to throw for a ton of yards and the Broncos running attack will make huge gains:
PREDICTION: Boise St. 41-Miami, OH. 10

The Fightin' Mormons (Okay....I'm not taking any shots at B.Y.U.) fly to New Orleans to take on that academic power Tulane. The only Waves the Green Wave will be seeing will be the ones washing over their defense in the form of QB Max Hall throwing to McKay Jacobson and maybe RB Harvey Unga will be ready to make his season debut:
PREDICTION: B.Y.U. 55-Tulane 7

Oklahoma St. welcomes in the Cougars of Houston. Now I like Cougar head coach Kevin Sumlin. He has proved he can manage an offense and does have some weapons in QB Case Keenum and RB Bryce Beall. The Cougars can move the ball, even against a very good defense, as the Cowboys showed they will be this year with their performance against Georgia last week. That being said, I don't think Houston can slow down Robinson, Bryant & Hunter (sounds like a law firm):
PREDICTION: Oklahoma St. 47-Houston 24

The traditional turf war moves to Ann Arbor, MI as "MY" 5th ranked Irish take on the surprising Wolverines of Michigan. I think this will be a close game for about 3 quarters and thats when the outside speed of the Notre Dame receivers will show their separation abilities and make some huge plays downfield for Jimmy Clausen. The MUCH improved Irish defense will confuse either freshman QB Forcier or Robinson, don't be surprised to see QB Nick Sheridan have a few snaps as a change of pace.
PREDICTION: Notre Dame 31-Michigan 16

Everyones favorite BCS buster, the Utah Utes (my apologies to the Boise St. fans) travel to San Jose St. who are still licking their wounds after getting trounced by the Trojans last week. I really think the Spartans will battle Utah all 4 quarters as San Jose St. coach Dick Tomey will get his troops ready to play. That being said, I like the QB play of JUCO transfer Terrance Cain and I think the Utah defense will be just a little too much, but this one will be MUCH closer than the Vegas people are saying:
PREDICTION: Utah 27-San Jose St. 24

Blaine Gabbert has arrived ! If the sophomore plays anything like he did against Illinois, the Missouri Tigers might sneak up on some people. As good as Gabbert and the offense was last week it was the Mizzou defense that shocked people. Linebacker Sean Weatherspoon is a potential All-American (who can also bench press 520 lbs. !). I haven't said anything about Bowling Green yet, okay....Urban Meyer started his head coaching career there...there is your Bowling Green moment:
PREDICTION: Missouri 42-Bowling Green 14

This one is a very interesting rematch from last year as U.C.L.A. travels east to play the Vols of Tennessee. New Vols coach Lane Kiffin had it easy in last weeks romp over Western Kentucky. Gotta' love safety Eric Berry (a top 10 pick in next years N.F.L. draft) and QB Jonathon Compton was void of any mistakes. Too bad this weeks opponent is not Western Kentucky. The Bruins have a very solid defense led by All-American DT Brian Price (how did the Trojans let this guy get away ???). I think this will be a very close game but even though the Bruins are traveling far, I like them:
PREDICTION: U.C.L.A. 23-Tennessee 20

How about Georgia, trying to shake off last weeks loss to Oklahoma St. taking on South Carolina. Spurriers crew looked good defensively against N.C. State last week but QB Stephen Garcia has yet to develop like "The Ballcoach" has hoped. He is prone to mistakes and forced throws...I like the Bulldog defense to win this one:
PREDICTION: Georgia 20-South Carolina 13

Only 12 games to chose from as a lot of the top teams are playing their JV schedules so there is no need in picking and I dont' see any upsets in those games.

Well, since I have already posted my "pre-season" Top 20, lets pretend for a second that I actually have a vote in the BCS. If I did here are my Top 20 for this week:

I'm sure someone has an argument for their team being "disrespected" in the above poll. I like Texas number 1 until someone beats them. Florida the same in the second position. Based on last weeks performances, Notre Dame is that good (I hate to admit it, because as Fletch well knows, I hate the Fightin' Irish). Sorry Michigan, a good showing against Clausen and company will put you in next week. Ohio St. drops but has a chance to redeem theirselves this weekend. Oklahoma is in BIG trouble and unless they can find some offensive line help, will be out of the Big-12 South race by mid October ! Southern Cal will have to step it up a notch at Columbus this weekend. Cincinnati moves into the Top 20 with an impressive performance in trashing Rutgers. Michigan St. has two good QB's and a stingy defense and B.Y.U. and Utah show why the Mountain West is a top flight conference. Sorry to the Tiger fans but L.S.U. did not show much in an average performance in Seattle against an undermanned Husky squad.

Opening Weekend Final Thoughts

Maybe I should quit while I'm ahead ? I picked a total of 16 games and finished 14-2, losing the Missouri-Illinois game (I never thought freshman QB Blaine Gabbert would play as well as he did and senior QB Juice Williams would play so poorly) and the Oregon-Boise State game.

Some final thoughts before I blog again on Thursday to preview the big upcoming slate of games this weekend. Sooner QB Sam Bradford will be sidelined for 2-4 weeks. He could be back sooner (no pun intended), but safe bet since Oklahoma will be playing Idaho St. this weekend followed by a bye, might have him ready for the Sooners BIG-12 match up with Baylor. Folks, Baylor is NO JOKE..and will be a major test, especially if Bradford is not ready. Unfortunately for Oklahoma, their trip to Miami could be a nightmare ! Best pass on that game and start versus Texas October 17th. Worse news could be TE Jermaine Gresham. I just heard head coach Bob Stoops press conference and they are having exploritory surgery to see if there is any significant damage to the cartlidge...if they have to do a surgical repair, Gresham will be lost for the season, huge blow as he is the only returning offensive starter that can catch the ball !

Another observation (and I'm not just picking on Oklahoma here) is that if you don't have at least 3 returning starters on the offensive line with at least 10 starts apiece, you will be in BIG trouble. I was really impressed by the following this weekend:

Notre Dame (yes....that team from South Bend). Clausen was great, the offensive line was great, the running game was great, the defense was great and Michael Floyd was all world. Another impressive performance, the Wolverines..who just happen to be Notre Dame's next opponent. Both freshman QB's (Forcier and Robinson) showed they have bigtime playmaking ability. The running game will have to improve, but the Michigan defense was overwhelming. I was actually impressed with Washington (even in losing 31-23 to L.S.U.). The Tigers had much more talent, but Coach Sarkisian had the Huskies playing with enthusiasm, their execution was much better, Locker (once acclamaited to the system) will be very good and running back Chris Polk is a star in the making. B.Y.U., nuff said about the Mountain West Conference. Trust me, this won't be the ONLY shock as in a few weeks, the Cougars will take apart Florida State by at least 17 points ! Brian Kelly showed everyone in America that he is a first class coach and the next "hot" head coach in college football. He lost TEN starters on defense and completely throttled the Rutgers offensive attack. He has QB Tony Pike playing at a high level and they should battle South Florida, Pitt and West Virginia for Big East (yes...after witnessing the Bearcats....the Big Least is no more) supremecy.

Big-12 picture, Oklahoma St. looked very good on defense (thank you Bill Young). The offense did sputter at times but Zac Robinson came through when needed and Dez Bryant proved he is a big time threat in the passing game. Georgia came out of the game really nicked up as starting offensive tackle Jonathan Sturdivant tore his ACL for the second straight year :-(. Gotta' feel bad for the kid as he worked his way back all winter and spring only to have the same thing happen to the same knee. I thought Nebraska played a very complete game. Head Coach Bo Pelini is a rising star. The former Ohio St. linebacker really has the Huskers playing agressive football. They are going to be a handful for Big-12 North teams. Dont' be shocked to see Nebraska in the Big-12 Championship game (actually I'm predicting Nebraska to win the Big-12 North). Impressed with freshman QB Matt Barkley. He started slowly but played within the context of the Trojan offense. New Trojan offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates made things fairly easy for the freshman and with the stable of running backs lined up behind Barkley, he had no difficulties after the first quarter. More on Barkley this week previewing the Ohio St.-Southern Cal. game. I thought U.C.L.A. played well, particularly on defense. The Bruins are on their way back and tangle with SEC foe Tennessee at Nyland Stadium this weekend.

Opening Weekend Wrap-Up

Here it is, 1:13 a.m. EST and I'm still watching college football ? Some suprises and some things remain the same. Lets look at some of the games that were picked by yours truly:

My opening game between Boise St. and Oregon was a bit of a suprise to me, but I do not consider the outcome an upset. The real upset was the lack of offensive execution by Coach Kelly's crew. The unfortunate post game issue with LaGarrette Blount cost him his collegiate career and takes away a huge part of the Duck offense. That being said, Boise St. controlled the game and should have won be a larger margin. FINAL: Boise St. 19-Oregon 8.

I was SHOCKED by Missouri dominating Illinois. Mizzou QB Blaine Gabbert accounted for 4 TD's and threw for 313 yards in his first college start. On the other side, Juice Williams looked less than effective and star wideout Arrelious Benn left the game in the 2nd quarter due to injury. FINAL: Missouri 37-Illinois 9.

Jimmy Clausen was near perfect completing 15-18 for 318 yards and 4 TD's as Notre Dame rolled. Clausen was not sacked in this game and receiver Michael Floyd looked like a Bilitnekof award winner. The re-tooled Irish defense pitched a shut out over what some considered a very good offensive team. FINAL: Notre Dame 35-Nevada 0.

Finally a really good pick, Oklahoma St. survived some jitters early as they took care of SEC power Georgia. The visitors from Athens drove the ball for a TD on their opening posession but Oklahoma St. settled down. Actually, the Cowboy defense won the game....limiting Georgia to under 250 total yards. Oklahoma St. receiver Dez Bryant made a tremendous TD catch (one of 2 TD's on the day) as the Cowboys avenged their 35-10 loss last year to Georgia.
FINAL: Oklahoma St. 24-Georgia 10.

After a slow start, freshman QB Matt Barkley woke up as did the Trojan offense to the tune of a major blowout against overmatched San Jose St. I thought the Spartans would keep it close for half...I was wrong, they kept it close for about the first 9 minutes, then the landslide. Barkley threw for over 200 yards and his first TD. Joe McNight ran for 149 and a TD. The Trojan defense looked awesome. Pass rush, stopped the run and defended the pass with excellence. The thing I noticed about Southern Cal is they have FIVE running backs that would start for most top 10 teams ! FINAL: Southern Cal. 56-San Jose St. 3.

I was off on the Gators...I had them winning 58-3....wow...missed that one..not much to be said in this game. Speed kills as did the Gators to poor Charleton Southern.
FINAL: Florida 62-Chareston Southern 3.

Currently Cal is up big on Maryland 52-14 late in the 4th. Jahvid Best ran wild in the opening half and Bears QB Kevin Riley is playing like a PAC-10 starter ! Payback....! I don't think I see a Terrapin comeback at this hour !

Just switched on ESPN....with 3 minutes to go, L.S.U. is beating the Huskies 24-16. Not a bad start for Coach Sarkisian....L.S.U. is loaded and Washington has hung in there. L.S.U. needs to open up the offense more, use that outside speed more. I suppose Washington could come back, but I think L.S.U. will hang on.

Okay....the "SHOCKER" of the day ??? And my top pick of the day..Brigham Young upsetting the mighty Sooners ! The unfortunate injury to Sooners QB Sam Bradford made it difficult for Oklahoma to mount any kind of consistent offense in the second half. B.Y.U. QB Max Hall made the throws when he needed them. The real undoing here was the SORRY play of the Sooner offensive line, especially (and I hate to single out one player but...) RT, Cory Brandon. My gawd was he awful ! THREE illegal procedure calls on the FIRST offensive series ??? And a very bad false start penalty on the try for a game tying drive ! It's going to be a LONG year for the Sooners if they don't plug up the holes in the offensive line. The Cougars played without leading rusher Harvey Unga and still beat Oklahoma. The prognosis for Bradford is a sprained shoulder (2-4 weeks). Hello Landry Jones ! Oh yeah, WHY doesn't the Moutain West have an automatic BCS bid ????
FINAL: Brigham Young 14-Oklahoma 13.

Texas blitzed Louisiana-Monroe. Not much to add here, Colt McCoy threw for 317 and a pair of TD's. He looked "okay" but I really don't think the Horns' were up for this game.
FINAL: Texas 59-Lousiana Monroe 20.

The Tide looked "impressive" in their win over Va. Tech. The Hokies were outgained by the Tide 498 to 155 in total offense. Making his first start, QB Greg McElroy threw for 230 yards and 1 TD (and 1 INT). Hokie coach Beamer is now 0-10 against Top 10 teams on the road (and neutral sites). Star wideout Julio Jones was not a factor for the Tide catching 4 balls for 48 yards. FINAL: Alabama 34-Virginia Tech 24.

Syracuse "almost" squeaked one out at home..but fell to Minnesota in OT. Sorry, I can't root for any Dukies...especially a former starting point guard for Coach K's team ! That being said, at least the Orange looked organized ! FINAL: Minnesota 23-Syracuse 20.

HUSKY UPDATE.....with 30 seconds remaining...L.S.U. 31-Washington 16. Tiger QB Jordan Jefferson threw his 3rd TD of the game with 1:23 remaining.

Some good stories and good games...the Buckeyes got a MAJOR SCARE from the Midshipmen.....Anchors Away almost pulled off the shocker, losing 31-27. Terrell Pryor played average and will have to do better to beat the Trojans next Saturday. He threw a pick that lead directly to a Navy TD. The Middies went for a 2 point conversion to tie the game with 1:45 remaining, which got intercepted and run back for 2 points the other way.

How about those Wolverines ! Coach Rodriguez has found a QB OR 2 ! Okay, Dennard Robinson can FLY and has speed to burn..but the Wolverines QB now and for the future is another freshman, Tate Forcier. All Forcier did was throw for 3 TD's to lead Michigan to a solid 31-7 win over Western Michigan. Brandon Graham and the Woverine defense looked stout !

How about the ACC with Virginia and Duke losing to William & Mary and Richmond ? Heck, Clemson RB C.J. Spiller got hurt and lets hope for the Tigers sake it's nothing serious.

Okay, it's now 1:59, my Huskies have lost to L.S.U. and it's time for bed ! To my blog followers "Wayne's World", congrats on the Michigan victory ! I was really impressed with Forcier ! And to "Fletch", your Golden Domers looked very good !

Opening Week Predictions

The setting, Boise, ID. The date, September 3, 2009. The time, 10:00 EST. Welcome to the opening game of the 2009 College Football season and what a way to start things off ! A rematch of last years game in Eugene, OR as the Boise St. Broncos battle the Oregon Ducks. Even though this is the first game of the season, a loss to Oregon will ruin any chances of the Broncos going to a BCS Bowl game. A win and Boise St. could run the table ! Even if Oregon loses this game, they have a loaded PAC-10 schedule to rebound from. The strength of the Boise St. defense are arguably the best cornerback duo in the nation in Brandyn Thompson and Kyle Wilson. Look for Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli to use his mobility and pick up huge chunks of yardage on broken plays and hand off to tailback Blount. Broncos QB Moore will put up impressive offensive stats but it won't be enough, the Ducks gain a measure of revenge.
PICK: Oregon 34 Boise St. 24

Our next game to view is the ACC vs. SEC challenge as Virginia Tech meets the Crimson Tide of Alabama in a neutral site (Georgia Dome). Losing starting running back Darrell Evans will hurt the Hokies but Tyrod Taylor is a similar player to former Hokie Michael Vick. That being said and even with Alabama breaking in a new quarterback, I like the Tide to roll over Va. Tech.
PICK: Alabama 20 Virginia Tech 13

This one should be fun ! The high powered offense of the Cowboys of Okie St. take on SEC perenial power Georgia. Some people are smelling upset as Oklahoma St. is actually a 4 point favorite. Bulldog Joe Cox finally get his chance to star for Georgia. I just think there is a little too much offense for Oklahoma St. I like the home team to win this one.
PICK: Oklahoma St. 31 Georgia 27

Jerry Jones gets his brand new Cowboys Stadium into the spotlight as a non-conference battle between Brigham Young and Oklahoma takes center stage. This could be interesting. I sense an upset here. I know...Oklahoma is loaded on offense and defense BUT the Cougars have 9 starters back on defense and I think they will pressure Sam Bradford into some hurried throws. I think Max Hall will have success throwing intermediate routes to negate the Sooner pass rush.
PICK: Brigham Young 27 Oklahoma 24

One of the most exciting players in the nation, bar none ! Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin can do it all with his feet and arm. The 6'-4" slingshot will make it difficult for Wake Forest to contain him and the much improved Bears defense will slow down Riley Skinner and the Deamon Deacon offense.
PICK: Baylor 37 Wake Forest 17

This one is near and dear to my heart. Ever since Warren Mooon donned the number 1 jersey and took apart Michigan in the 1978 Rose Bowl, I've always been a Washington Husky fan. But lately the Huskies have fallen on hard times. After dismissing Rick Neuheisel (after leading Washington to an 11-1 and 2nd ranked season), the Huskies hired Ty Willingham which turned into a complete disaster. Former Southern Cal. offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian takes over a roster starved for talent coming off a winless season. Fortunately the Huskies open up at home, unfortunately they open against SEC power L.S.U. Perfect game for coach Les Miles to open up the offense for Jordan Jefferson. Look for true freshman Russell Shepard to be heard from and the battering ram backfield duo of Charles Scott and Keiland Williams to run over an undersized Husky defensive front
PICK: L.S.U. 35 Washington 10

"Shake down the echoes"...okay I'm not singing the Notre Dame fight song, but this is the first step in what should be a BCS year for the Irish. Their opening day opponent can score points, but Nevada has no defense and Notre Dame and Jimmy Clausen should roll.
PICK: Notre Dame 41 Nevada 17

This game always produces points in bunches. This years Missouri-Illinois game should be interesting as Mizzou has to replace all time leading passer Chase Daniel and record breaking receiver and kick returner Jeremy Macklin. Juice Williams comes back to lead the Illini and will be throwing to one of the best wide outs in the BIG-10 in Arelious Benn. Curious to see how sophomore Blaine Gabbert will manage his first varsity start.
PICK: Illinois 33 Missouri 24

Tim Tebow should throw for 4 TD's in less than a half as the Gators obliterate Charlston Southern (did anyone know they had a football team ???). Total mismatch !
PICK: Florida 56 Charlston Southern 3

Colt McCoy will throw even more TD's than Tebow ! He'll play into the third quarter against powerhouse Louisiana-Monroe (okay, kidding..they are NOT a powerhouse). Lets have some fun, McCoy begins his Heisman campaign (18-22, 354 yards 5 TD's).
PICK: Texas 58 Louisiana-Monroe 10

This game could be closer than the experts believe. For three quarters anyway. Look for the Tigers of Memphis to keep in close for a half and up to three quarters before Ole' Miss QB Jevan Snead shreds the Tiger secondary.
PICK: Mississippi 34 Memphis 20

Everyone will be anticipating the debut of Trojan freshman QB Matt Barkley. It won't come as easy as everyone things. San Jose St. finished 21st in total defense last year and head coach Dick Tomey is known for his defensive squads. That being said, just too much talent on the Trojan side. Unfortunate injury for Southern Cal. as they lost starting wide receiver Ronald Johnson to a broken collarbone for 6-8 weeks. David Ausberry should step in as an adequate replacement.
PICK: Southern Cal. 38 San Jose St. 10

Just watched the movie "Express" the Ernie Davis Story. To bad Syracuse can't go back in the time machine and suit up Davis, Jim Brown, Floyd Little and Larry Czonka and have Donavan McNabb as the QB ! A new coach but not much talent as the Orange host the Gophers from Minnesota. Gopher coach Tim Brewster started off hot last year 7-0 then lost 6 straight. Game should be closer than most thing but the losing ways continue for the Orange.
PICK: Minnesota 26 Syracuse 14

A HUGE Big Least clash ! Assumption Colleges own Brian Kelly brings his Cincinnati Bearcats to Piscattaway, NJ to take on Rutgers. Defending champ Cincinnati has Tony Pike and an experienced offense but does lose alot of talent on defense. The Scarlet Knights have a one of the best offensive lines in all of college football but lose record setting QB Mike Teel and second round pick Kenny Britt. This should come down to the end and possible the kicking game. I like the coaching ability of Kelly (hey, could I pick against a former Greyhound ??) and the experience of Pike.
PICK: Cincinnati 26 Rutgers 17

My last pick game of the opening slate of games. The annual sunshine state battle between ACC foes Florida St. and Miami, FL. This one is being played in Talahassee and I like Canes' coach Randy Shannon team to win this one. I like the athleticism of QB Jacory Harris and new offensive coordinator Mark Whipple is an offensive guru ! He will open up the Miami offense and the usual stingy Canes' D will pressure Noles' QB Christian Ponder into mistakes.
PICK: Miami 24 Florida St. 17

My Bonus pick will be the Terps of Maryland flying cross country to take on the California Golden Bears. I have Cal in my top 10....I don't have Maryland anywhere. Nuff said, Bears RB Best has a HUGE game, Riley hits some big plays and Cal overpowers the visitors from the ACC.

My pick is Colt McCoy. I firmly believe he should have won the award last year and in 2009, he will be center stage come Heisman time and also quarterback his first ever BCS National Championship team.

So, we've finished the Top 10. Some suprises and some automatics, but rounding out my next 10 picks will have some people shaking their heads in disbelief. If you're a betting man, some of these teams could win you some money from those Vegas oddsmakers.

What ??? Brigham Young ??????? Nebraska ??????? South Florida ????????. Listen, Max Hall will put up Ty Detmer like numbers for Brigham Young and "if" possibly they pull a shocker in their opener against Oklahoma, they could run the table. L.S.U. has talent on both sides of the ball, speed and size. The one thing hurting coach Les Miles team will be consistent quarterback play. The folks in Baton Rouge hope sophomore Jordan Jefferson will step up and show the promise he showed in late November of last year. The Tigers do have a top dual threat recruit in QB Russell Shepherd, but look for him to play a variety of positions and formations for the Bayou Bengals until he is ready or Jefferson implodes. Boise State should surprise knowone. They have been a bigtime program for the past 10 years and coach Chris Peterson has another loaded team. They do lose all time rushing leader Ian Johnson but returning QB Kellen Moore will throw for over 3,000 yards toss 30 TD's. Another potential BCS party crasher "IF" they can take care of Oregon at home on the blue turf. Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson is one of the better coaches in the country and has won wherever he has traveled. He has brought his triple option attack to the ACC and it paid dividends early. Running back Jonathan Dwyer is poised to have another All-American type year and most of their offensive starters return. They do lose 8 defensive starters and coordinator Jon Tenuta. Who was the team that beat the Gators last year in the swamp....answer MISSISSIPPI. Which QB outplayed Tim Tebow last year....answer JEVAN SNEAD. The Rebels have an abundance of starting experience back on both sides of the ball so look for Ole Miss to battle L.S.U. and Alabama in the SEC West. Georgia loses some key players from last years 9-4 squad, most notebly number one pick QB Matthew Stafford and fellow first rounder Knowshon Moreno. Joe Cox will try to fill the void left by Stafford and Coach Mark Richt will test Caleb King and Richard Samuel to see who will replace the departed Moreno. The Dawgs' do have a super talent at WR in sophomore A.J. Green. Like Bama's Julio Jones, I think this will be Green's final year before leaving for greener pastures. Nebraska coach Bo Pelini is as hard nosed and tough as they come and is re-establishing the Cornhusker tradition. Under former coach Bill Callahan, Nebraska (although recruiting well) became a "soft" west coast offensive, passive zone defensive team. Thing are changing in Lincoln...Pelini has restored the "Blackshirts" into a ball hawking gang tackling unit. Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh (DO NOT ASK ME TO PRONOUNCE IT !) is a 6'-4" 320 BEAST ! The Huskers will take a hit as top returning RB Quinten Castille was suspended indefinately by coach Pelini for conduct reasons. Inexperience at the quarterback position will be a hurdle, but Zac Lee will play better as he gains experience. Look for Nebraska to unseat Kansas and Missouri in the BIG 12 North. The Horned Frogs return 8 starters on offensive including QB Andy Dillon. All-American defensive end Jerry Hughes (15 sacks) returns to terrorize opposing QB's. They will battle Brigham Young and Utah in the Mountain West. I like South Florida to edge past Cincinnati and Rutgers in the BIG LEAST...I mean BIG EAST. Okay, not to knock the BIG EAST but honestly, top to bottom the Mountain West is a better conference and more deserving of an automatic BCS bid. That being said, the Bulls have exciting QB Matt Grothe and running back Mike Ford returng not to mention sack specialist George Selvie back at defensive end. Selvie will need to get back to his sophomore form when he led the nation in sacks with 18. Penn State rounds out my top 20. Most people have them in the Top 10, but Daryll Clark is mistake prone and loses his top three receivers. Evan Royster bolsters a capable running back corps and a solid defense does return linebacker Sean Lee from injury. Sorry Joe Pa...not this year !
